Report: Tottenham set to land West Brom’s £7M star this summer

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur will be in the market for a backup goalkeeper this summer after extending Hugo Lloris until 2024. As a result, the north London club won’t be looking for a starter but someone that’s okay with being behind the France international.

According to the Evening Standard, Spurs are set to land West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer in the summer. After telling them he wanted to exit when his deal expires next month, Johnstone has not played for the club for a month.

The England international wants to restart his career and play for a Premier League club next season, and Tottenham is eyeing him as a backup for their 35-year-old starter.

Johnstone has been with West Brom since 2018, appearing in 167 fixtures for the Championship club, where he’s registered 45 clean sheets during his tenure there.

It will be interesting to see how Johnstone adapts back to the Premier League and to being a backup should the deal become official.

My mate is longtime Baggie home and away loves Sam so good enough for me.

I said earlier that I rated Hugo. He’s had a great Spurs career and I think is up there with Clemence as the best I’ve seen in my lifetime at Spurs. Getting on though and I feel Pope is quality in a crap team.

Pickford is extremely overrated. He has the odd big game, but also frequent shockers, he’s ranked 20th in the keeper rankings.. Tough to win titles when you can’t rely on your Keep.

Pope isn’t great.. He’s ranked 8th in the prem this season so far which is a level below Hugo who consistently makes top 3 every season and is there right now only bettered by Allison and Edison.. Lloris is underrated in my opinion, doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s also been extremely loyal to us.. He’s almost like Kane.. Irreplaceable.

I like Pope, he needs a change too so would be a lot cheaper than Pickford, but Johnstone needs to prove he can be the number one.

I’d take Pickford and make him no 1. Lloris is a great shot stopper but Pickford is a better all rounder and his distribution is especially good (unlike Lloris). I’d play Pickford in the league and Lloris in the cups and Europe. If Everton stay up it’s largely thanks to Pickford.

Says “his deal expires next month” so it’s a free in the summer window.

Pope is a great keeper. He could take over Lloris now. Have to say I have always rated Hugo though and feel he’s been great for us. At his age it’s prudent to backfill though I would prioritize other positions over GK if budget was limited. Under Levy, budget obviously is!!!

Apparently his fee is 7M so almost a free, although Levy would probably want to halve that.

As an England international i would imagine he has to be guaranteed a certain number of games to make it worth while for him to come.I would suggest all cup games and a handful of winnable PL games perhaps.

Otherwise he might as well go somewhere else and play every week.Everton could be a good alternative if they’re prepared to let Pickford go.I would like him or Pope to come in push Lloris possibly to no.2 and take the captaincy away from him.

Would do, need a keeper for the ropey too. A free is Levy’s favourite sort of deal, he’ll still pontificate for several weeks over it.
