How A Well Run Club Operates

Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill is in no doubt the club have added quality to the squad over the summer – but it is the quantity which is a worry for the England defender.

Conte has spoken out several times over his frustrations about the size of Chelsea’s squad and – despite adding Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko as well as Morata – Cahill shared those concerns.

Asked if he felt the champions’ squad was small, Cahill pointed to the squad lists on the back of the match-day programme – which had 24 Chelsea players listed compared to 41 from Arsenal.

“I don’t know, the back of the programme was interesting today,” he said.

“But in terms of quality we’ve certainly got that and you just have to hope we don’t have too many injuries.

“Obviously the new players that have just come, they’re going to be vitally important for us and the quicker they settle, the better, but there’s no doubt we’ve added quality to the team.”

“They’re going to be tested 100 per cent,” Cahill replied when asked about the strain on the players within the squad.

“We’ll see how that plays out, but we just have to keep everybody fit, keep everybody sharp. Rest is going to be important because we’re going to have a lot of games.

Kyle Walker-Peters did not look out of place on Saturday against the Italian champions and CL runners up. I know that Pochettino has said he’s not ready for the PL yet, but Newcastle away (on paper, at least) isn’t exactly the most demanding of fixtures.

If Wanyama’s absence meant that Eric Dier has to play in midfield I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Walker-Peters make his PL debut on Sunday.

Dont know is anyone has watched Scott and Bailey. I know its a bt old now but one of the great things they do on that show is interview suspects brilliantly. Its written very well and acted impeccably and the dialogue is really great and those interviews really paint the suspect in a corner.

Id like to see Rachel (she is a bit of all right) and Janet interview Levy and keep the door locked

i’m afraid we’re confusing ourselves and worse kidding too if we think these inflated values on players is storm that’s just going to mellow down and back to a normal calmer status quo of before, the bar has risen in fees and wages and levy’s somehow got to realise this for the future…….4 years ago a packet of 20 cost us 4 quid and now it’s almost doubled does this clear the smoke out of our eyes.

Marsinho we are getting money too.Big money. And its not being spent on players.

    • Ronan August 7, 2017 at 7:23 pm

Ron, you couldn’t be more right: there’s the giant new TV deal money, UCL money x 2; 2nd-place money. None of that could have been factored into the funds the club had have available for the stadium build. Since the stadium-build funds were calculated, Poch has turned Spurs into title contenders. But the chairman has made a conscious decision to deny these three big financial windfalls to Poch and instead divert them into the stadium. WHY is he doing this, when the club’s finally on the brink of achieving the PL title it exists to achieve? The whole point oif increasing the ground’s capacity in the first place!

Re your doubts as to whether Poch actually wants new players:
      https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/01/tottenham-must-buy-to-compete-for-title-mauricio-pochettino

      • ronwol196061 August 7, 2017 at 7:36 pm

Poch keeps saying different things so Im not sure whats in his head. The ONLY rationalisation for doing things as usual is the fact that 2nd place although everyone sees as where we should be at, maybe they would have been happy with 4th.
Many of the bigger teams underperformed last year and so maybe 4th was our real figure and now maybe the fans are thinking we are a couple of players short of a title (Poch may be with Levy or at least agree with Levy about that based on their budgets)
Seeing the other teams spend should be a red flag of sorts that the CL place is not nailed on this year. Its going to be difficult to deal with and we need more there is no doubt. So maybe with the window not done maybe there is a few players coming.
If there isnt,I think the pressure will be great on the team. From the league point of view and competition and also the fans who will all say I told you so.
Poch will be under pressure and may not hang in with Levy and Levy will be fucked for much more than 60 million worth of players. He might say thank you very much Levy Ive had enough.
Its a silly gamble for Levy to take. No a fucking stupid gamble for Levy to take.

        • Ronan August 7, 2017 at 7:42 pm

That’s right. Its a far bigger gamble NOT to give Poch whatever he thinks he needs to win the title.

Unless they play 3 backs. Unsure whether Sissoko crosses well, but if he can, then a 3 back and wingback setup might favor him out on the right. He does have a bit of proper pace, and he is not afraid of a tackle. Pressures well up high, and already tends to like the wide ground rather than the middle.

We lack one midfielder who can hit a great pass.
All the other top teans have them..sometimes more than one.
Not havong one limits us to the extra pass or two.
We can get it from the wing backs but high balls have a low percentage of success

  • Caspurs♿️ August 7, 2017 at 5:58 pm

Can someone confirm if it’s Jorge Mendes that Spurs will NOT do business with?

  • MiT August 7, 2017 at 5:47 pm

Getting Wanyama back in will be a huge boost.

Rose and Sonny as well in early September.

However, I am not counting on Lamela in October. Thar situation is just too strange. I do not even think I would punt a 100 on 20:1 on it.

I think there will be 2 signings. I think Barkley will come in, and I think a right back was already a target as well before Trippier’s injury.

I think Cancelo would be a great fit for his offensive skill, but he seems to want Italy over PL. Likely a cheaper target.

I think I would rather see Siggurdsson than Barkley, but I do not see Siggurdsson aa being big on a return to a club that spurned him.

  • Mattspurs August 7, 2017 at 5:32 pm

I remember speaking to Pleaty a few years ago when he was director of football and asked him why we signed Paulo Tremmanazi – he said that sometimes Levy would just buy the player a manager really really wanted even if the scouts were doubtful.
I’m just not sure Poch wants anybody ‘enough’ to make Levy feel compelled to buy him. You would think that one strop or threat to walk out from Poch over buying players would do the trick but I don’t think Poch is confident in the market. Maybe he’s been given a budget but is just a bit uncertain what to do with it?

    • ronwol196061πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ August 7, 2017 at 5:59 pm

So there us sonething in Pochs trepidation?

    • jjm August 7, 2017 at 8:09 pm

Our problem is wages. We will spend 30m on a player but the wages of some players is too much for the club. I read an article about the wages issue yesterday and it does make a bit of sense. If we pay a player coming in 150k a week then our top players will at least want parity with that. Even 100k isnt a big salary by some standards now, and certainly nowhere near enough to atract top talent.

Whether we can actually afford to pay 6 or 7 players 150k-200k a week is another matter. Until that problem is resolved, we will maybe be there or abouts when other clubs are below par, or we will be just short, as we have always been.

The only real solution to this problem is one of those guys that starves his own people to use the coffers of his country for a new expensive toy. Hopefully he will also attract nice big sponsors too.

      • Devonshirespur August 7, 2017 at 5:27 pm

No Wanyama so Dier might be needed in the middle…and if Sisokko is wing back then Dier might be needed as 3rd CB

        • Freund or Foe August 7, 2017 at 5:31 pm

There is that. Winks and Dembele, but not sure Poch would want that first game away, or the ‘home’ game v Cheats. Sissoko would scare the shite out of me at wing back.

          • MiT August 7, 2017 at 5:49 pm

A reserve RB is always better than a makeshift sulking one..Give KWP the shirt and give all the youngsters a base to work and claim their shirt one day..end of.

      • MiT August 7, 2017 at 5:55 pm

Has Dier been sulking about playing RB in tge past ? He seems to pride himself on the versatility.

KWP is a flea. He has a bit of work ahead of him for his body to hold up to full-time PL work. Trippier was 2 for 2… 2 ill-advised, ill-form tackles, 2 injuries. KWP can fill minutes, but he cannot yet take a full-time PL beating. In my strong opinion at least.

The Walker thing speaks volumes. He went. We knew he was going. We got a lot of cash. We’ve looked at KWP and know hes not ready. So where are the identified targets.

We’re in a difficult position. Clubs are asking for fortunes and only time will soften this, but this Walker replacement should have been in the bag before the world knew we got Β£50m burning a hole.

        • mattspurs August 7, 2017 at 5:06 pm

Agreed – personally thought that Poch would argue that KWP was good enough to be Trippier’s back up. If he’s not why haven’t we replaced Walker?

We are suddenly getting pretty hopeful that the likes of Janssen, Sissoko, NKD and Wimmer step up – given last season’s performances it’s a sizeable step.

          • MiT August 7, 2017 at 5:19 pm

Wimmer seems like a liability to me… even Austria avoids using him. I don’t know what has regressed, except that he gets caught flat-footed and ball watching. Players run behind him too easily.

            • Mattspurs August 7, 2017 at 5:25 pm

Maybe he just needs games? People on here weee moaning about his lack of playing last autumn but was poor when he came in. Poch then just seemed to lose all confidence in him preferring to player Dier at LCB.

              • MiT August 7, 2017 at 5:32 pm

More time never hurts the player, but it is not feasible when it directly hurts the team. Again, my biggest surprise is that Austria avoids using him as well.

                • Mattspurs August 7, 2017 at 5:38 pm

I’m not sure who the competition is.

        • Spurs Nut D August 7, 2017 at 5:17 pm

The problem is not the Walker money the problem is all the extra tv money this year has inflated prices. Although poch said he could be sold it was not certain walker would infact go. Now he is gone we have to find a replacement but buying before selling means other teams can hold you to ransom. Everton could be a classic case if they buy Siggy before selling Barkley. At the end of the window we make a low ball offer which they either take or get less in January or nothing next year. That’s why we always try to offload before buying and always leave it late.

          • marsinho August 7, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Chelsea dont fluff out their squads with youth players, just the ones that will viably play for the first team.

That’s quite bizarre on the flip side when you see that their youth squads over the past 5 or so seasons have literally walked the youth fa cup.

You’d think at least 1 or 2 would filter thru to the first team.

Yet none have yet sealed a place in it.

    Then you look at spurs.

A sound youth set up but not to the level of Chelsea (see above) yet levy seems to think half the first team should be littered with these hopefuls.

If Chelsea’s can’t make their first team, why should spurs be anywhere near good enough to make spurs’s?

He is a moron if he does need players to be successful within reason and he doesnt confront Levy

    • Karnage August 7, 2017 at 4:56 pm

Easy…Roman wants glory and Levy wants profits

      • Harry Hotspur August 7, 2017 at 5:00 pm

The sad thing is that Levy doesn’t understand that glory brings profits.

Normal human beings get excited by seeing their team hold up trophies – not balance sheets πŸ˜„

I agree that Levy is out of the ordinary and fucking frustrating there is no doubt.
We have only the power to go or not go or the power to push Poch to push Levy.
There is a common sense answer to this and that is cover for our pkayers in case they get injured and maybe they are working on this.
I want them to buy another auality CM too that may or may not happen. If they didnt I wouldnt be happy.but who gives a fuck what I think? They might care what Poch thinks.

But until he gets fed up with it, it’s his club and what we all think doesn’t matter. Since broadcasters, clothing companies, soft drinks peddlers and so on have all got huge hard ons for football, there is plenty of cash to be made just for turning up. Why outlay what would be a not inconsiderable sum of money to win a silver pot when just being in the competition in the first place still gets you a tidy whack? All that can be had whilst achieving a negative net spend. Anyone hoping for a change under ENIC should probably consider doing something else with their spare time.

            I couldn’t agree more.

    • mattspurs August 7, 2017 at 5:13 pm

Though they didn’t play any European football so any manager would argue that he needs more players to compete on more fronts. Chelsea have also sold a few, loaned out a few and Costa seems surplus to requirements.

Saying that our European performances were poor (as was our league form until we went out) so you’d think spending might improve us.

If we won the league that should be enough for another 2 generations..Black and White no longer but we will have a few colour pics in an extra ultra 24k HD age 50 years on
