This kid is the real deal.
If I was slow to embrace him, it’s because I’m an evidence based guy, and not some dumb dumb wanting to ‘get behind’ and cheer with my last breath the next haircut that strolls in wearing the shirt.
I’ve witnessed the slow decay of Hugo, and not so much the final straw as the final clue was watching the penalties against Wolves.
It wasn’t the fact they went in.
It was spectre of Paul Robinson that made my blood run cold, as the World Cup Winner fell over twice, in an almost completely unrelated manner to the shots that were struck.
Kindly refer to the Paul Robinson Bumper Book Of Boys Barrel Rolls for further details.
To upgrade our goalie would show more wisdom than it would bravery.
When your car tyres wear thin, you don’t say to the person on reception, ‘I’ve just popped in to be brave and have tyre replaced’, do you?
A side benefit of course would be to force the appointment of an outfield captain – opposed to taking direction from a French mime artist.
Win win.
As I’ve said before, stand-in keepers can look very good in the odd game. They play without pressure, with Vorm’s contract out in the summer it’s good to see Gazzaniga looking like he can perform to a decent level.
However, there is a massive jump from that role to keeping goal as first choice for a full season. It’s obvious that Hugo has lost focus since being caught driving pissed up.
I don’t see Hugo as an irretrievable situation, he’s in a funk right now but he’s still the only feasible 1st choice at the club…

No one really knows how good a player is gonna be but I reckon gazza will never be as good as hugo was at his peak. Gazza needs to be a no 2 for a bit longer. If hugo goes we need a better no 1 than gazza.
The New Gazza, he will be like a new signing.
Sadly, new keeper wouldn’t be our top priority. Next season it will be CB, CM (Dembele replacement and Wanyama, and hopefully Sissy), LB and possibly RB…then Keeper.

With all the things conspiring to derail our season,I don’t think an extended run in the side would do any harm to Gazzaniga’s chances of becoming our number one.
He looked confident last night and his distribution was marked better that Lloris shows. However his couple of performances need to be considered against a good run in the side.
Lloris is still capable of allowing us to snatch victories from seemingly improbable situations, but his errors are becoming increasing costly and I don’t think his distribution of the ball will improve with age. Also I cannot recall one penalty he has saved playing for us.He has saved some he has faced but I think they were playing for Lyon.
Will Poch make that decision,I doubt it.
His distribution was great…..
Honestly think Gazzina maybe exposed over a season, but if we are honest, he deserves a chance. What is stopping him is the way Hugo saved our bacon at Wolves and West Ham.
Talking of Capt’s….. Who would/could do better. It’s obvious to me we lack any kind of natural leader.
Never more obvious now with the lack of concentration and self belief we show when teams … to coin a phrase ‘Put on the pressure’
Did anyone else notice him shouting at the players last night? He communicates. He’s not an elective mute.
Would like to see much more of him.
Brilliant have the image Lloris in goal with beret white gloves and blue and white stripey jumper.
He has irked me a bit over the years when he has talked about moving on to other clubs in interviews, I do find the fact he hasn’t had a ‘big’ club come in for him quite amusing. However I think he falls into the category of players that Poch simply won’t drop. I can’t imagine seeing him sitting on the bench for a premier league game whilst Gaza is starting, I don’t think Poch would have the balls.
Completely agree on the Hugo decline H. When top teams are upgrading to bring in keepers who have great distribution skills we continue to persist with Hugo’s dithering and balls kicked into touch. I am not sure if Gaza would fix that entirely but it must be worth giving him a try. If he doesn’t deliver then a new keeper would become a top priority for next year (assuming there is going to be more than 5 quid in the transfer kitty).
