Former Spurs player rules out a title push next season, but he’s wrong – opinion

By Saikat -

Former Premier League midfielder and Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Murphy has claimed that a title challenge might not be realistic for the Londoners next season.

Antonio Conte’s men have been extremely active in the transfer market so far and they have brought in some impressive players to strengthen the squad. However, Murphy claims that Spurs will have to juggle multiple competitions next season and they might miss out on a proper title challenge.

He also added that the club hierarchy and manager Antonio Conte might not be thinking about challenging the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

Murphy said: “Tottenham’s big problem this season is bedding in their new players, that can take a bit of time, and it’s a season where they’re trying to find a balance between the Premier League, Champions League and the two domestic competitions. That will mean they might fall short of a title bid this season.

“I don’t think the Tottenham hierarchy or Conte will realistically think this season they can mount a title push. In seasons to come, who knows.”

Spurs were excellent during the second half of last season and they managed to secure Champions League qualification by overtaking arch-rivals Arsenal. They have added sufficient quality and depth to the squad since then and some of their new signings are expected to hit the ground running.

Richarlison has played in the Premier League over the last few seasons and he should be able to settle in quickly and make an immediate impact. Meanwhile, Perisic is an experienced professional who has proven his quality across multiple European leagues and his style of play should help him settle into the Premier League as well.

Furthermore, Conte has managed to strengthen his side defensively with the addition of Clement Lenglet on a loan deal from Barcelona. Djed Spence is likely to join up from Middlesbrough as well.

Spurs have added presence and defensive steel to their midfield as well with the signing of the former Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, who is well versed with the challenges of English football. The Mali international will be expected to make an immediate impact next season.

Conte already has top-class players like Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Cristian Romero at his disposal and players like Dejan Kulusevski are only going to get better having already impressed last season.

On the other hand teams, like Liverpool and Chelsea have lost key players (Sadio Mane, Antonio Rudiger etc) this summer and Manchester City could end up making quite a few changes to the squad as well.

Gabriel Jesus has already left the Premier League champions and the likes of Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling could follow. An experienced defensive midfielder and one of the leaders of the dressing room, Fernandinho has also left the club.

It would be naive to underestimate Tottenham and rule out a potential title challenge this summer, especially with a world-class manager like Antonio Conte at the helm.

The Italian has won the Premier League title in the past with Chelsea and he knows how to get the job done.

Danny Murphy was speaking exclusively to TheBoyHotspur via a commercial partner.

If anyone can take a “meeedle team” (Conte accent), to title winning Champions in just one season then it’s Conte.. He did it with both Inter and Chelsea. It’s what he does… He’s consistently won more titles than not everywhere he’s been.. And Serie A and the Premier league are two of the three hardest leagues in the world.. It’s not Ligue 1 or the Eredivise…. “Too competitive for Conte’ is nonsense man he thrives on it..

Conte will believe.. Many players old and new will believe.. I believe..
City are strong favourites right now after adding Haaland and Phillips. Liverpool have to be second and not far off them.
We are the next favourites. Chelsea are looking considerably weaker as it stands. Of course there’s still time left in this window.
Arsenal just make me laugh, they spent more than anyone last season. Spending again this window. I back them to fight for top 6 with Manure, Spam and probably the Barcodes.
Manure are pretty much in a crisis though, record signing Pogba left for free and Ronald wants out. How the mighty have fallen since the golden Sir Alex era. No one seems to be queuing up to play at the theatre of nightmares.. Apart from Tintin maybe? Has he signed yet? Verbal agreements don’t actually count.

Pefectly put S G !
With the man in charge we expect nothing less than a title challenge .
To believe we are going through our current “morph” to see if we can improve to 3rd is ridiculous !
We must aim for the title until its impossible , and I’d agree with you that any body within 5-8 points after Christmas has a hell of a chance of lifting the main prize . This has been our best “window” , since the Gareth Bale transfer led to all sorts of weird purchases ……….it was fun then , but I really feel this is a serious attempt by us to break established monopoly and I’m excited – we need one superstar to emerge to change those hearts and minds …………. C O Y S !!!!!

We should ‘challenge for the title’ with this squad – not the same thing as saying we are favourites.

Conte wouldn’t still be here if he didn’t think we’d at least challenge for it. This means staying within 8-10 pts of the leaders into early next year.

Then you have that position where if you beat them when you face them that’s effectively a 6pt swing and you’re really in it.

I agree with the majority. A title challenge is unrealistic, as Liverpool and City have strengthened also and are a considerable distance ahead of us. Overtaking Chelsea however is very doable.

It looks like they will be losing not just Rudiger and Christensen, but Azpilicueta and Alonso also. That’s a whole back four. So far none of them replaced and then there is the loss of their whole executive structure from the Abramovich era.

Of the ‘also-rans’, United are a shambles, in every aspect, with Ronaldo wanting to leave and the Arse are no more than treading water in my opinion. Newcastle will improve, but are probably not a top-four threat this season.

Accordingly I think 3rd is very realistic, but a genuine title push is not.

We still lack the depth in quality to challenge the top 2-3. There is always this collective joy within our support of a; we make signings b; do the absolute the basics that keep forward momentum. However, perspective is required and the excitement must be quelled to realistic proportions.

Look at how much better Citeh and Liverpool have been, then consider that they’ve both strengthened. On that basis, a Spurs title challenge would need to be a massive overachievement and an underachieving season for the aforementioned clubs. Top four again i suspect but title challenge? Nothing is impossible but for me the top of the table is probably too competitive, even if the starts aligned for Conte.
