Cristian Romero’s career at Tottenham Hotspur has been one of the most impactful defensive stories in recent club history. Nicknamed “Cuti,” the Argentine centre-back joined Spurs on an initial loan from Atalanta in August 2021 (with an obligation to buy), and the permanent transfer was completed in 2022 for around €55m. He quickly established himself as a defensive rock with his aggressive style, excellent reading of the game, interceptions, aerial dominance, and ability to play out from the back.

Early Years and Establishment (2021–2024)

Debut: Came on as a sub in a 1-0 win over Manchester City (August 2021).
First goal: Scored in a 2-0 victory against Brighton. He adapted quickly under managers like Nuno Espírito Santo, Antonio Conte, and later Ange Postecoglou, becoming a key part of the backline.

Known for his no-nonsense defending, but also picked up several red cards (including a few in the Premier League). Injuries occasionally disrupted his campaigns, but when fit, he was often Spurs’ most reliable defender. By 2023/24, he was named vice-captain and praised as the “rock” at the back.

Breakthrough and Glory (2024/25 Season)The 2024/25 season marked a high point: Romero captained Spurs in the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao, playing the full match in a 1-0 victory. This ended Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a major trophy and their first European title in 41 years. His leadership and defensive masterclass earned him Player of the Match and even UEFA Europa League Player of the Season recognition.

Current Era: Captaincy and Beyond (2025/26 Season)

Ahead of the 2025/26 season, following Son Heung-min’s departure, new manager Thomas Frank named Romero as club captain. He signed a new contract until 2029, committing his long-term future to the club despite interest from clubs like Atlético Madrid.

He’s continued to shine:

Scored in the UEFA Super Cup (though Spurs lost on penalties to PSG).
Produced a memorable performance against Newcastle United in December 2025, scoring twice — including a stunning bicycle kick stoppage-time equaliser — in a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Romero has also faced challenges, including red cards (e.g., against Liverpool in December 2025) and some public frustrations expressed on social media after tough results, but manager Frank has defended him as a “young leader” who sets standards.

As of January 2026, Romero has made over 120 appearances for Spurs (around 100 in the Premier League), scoring 7–10 goals (mostly headers), with strong defensive stats like numerous clearances, tackles, and aerial wins.

He’s evolved from a fiery arrival into a decorated leader (World Cup winner with Argentina, multiple Copas, now Europa League champion), and remains central to Tottenham’s ambitions.
