Tottenham vs Burnley: Recent history

The new Premier League campaign is already fast-approaching, with many of the
Top-flight clubs are kickstarting their pre-season training this week.

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham crop is included in that bunch, as the Dane looks to
oversee a stark improvement on their disappointing league return from last season.

The North Londoners kick off their season on home turf against Burnley on August
16, but how have Spurs fared against the Clarets in recent times?
We’ve decided to have a closer look at the recent history between the two teams
ahead of kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month.

Both clubs last met during Burnley’s most recent top-flight appearance, the 2023/24
season.

Back then, Spurs were overseen by former boss Ange Postecoglou, who recorded a
league double over their north-west counterparts in his debut term in charge.

And while the two victories helped Spurs to a fifth-place finish, the 2-1 home win in
May of that season confirmed Burnley’s relegation back to the Championship at the
first time of asking.

Former manager Vincent Kompany would subsequently depart for Bayern Munich,
leaving the reins free for current manager Scott Parker, who has since steered the
club back to the top-flight following a top-two finish in the second tier.

Parker himself has a wealth of history with Spurs, having made 50 appearances for
the club between 2011 and 2013. Still, the Englishman will be eager to overturn his

current side’s dismal run against the Lilywhites when the new campaign gets
underway next month.

Burnley has suffered four consecutive losses to Tottenham in all competitions since
a 1-0 win over the Londoners at Turf Moor in February 2022. That solitary win
remains their only triumph in their last 10 meetings.

Need more reason for optimism, Spurs fans? Keep reading. Burnley have not picked
up a single away victory in this fixture since January 1983, when they secured a 4-1
win in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

And to find their most recent league win, you have to go back even further, to
October 1974, where the Clarets picked up a 3-2 away victory at White Hart Lane for
a second successive season.

A win in their first game in charge can be crucial for a manager and, given the recent
history between this pair, it’s fair to say the odds are well-stacked in the favour of
Frank and co.
