As of September 14, 2025, there has been no completed transfer of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham Hotspur. However, recent reports indicate strong interest from Tottenham, with speculation pointing to a potential move in the January 2026 transfer window.

Van Hecke, a 25-year-old Dutch centre-back, has been a standout performer for Brighton, earning “Player of the Season” honours in his breakout 2024-25 campaign under manager Fabian Hürzeler. His contract with Brighton runs until 2027, but he has reportedly delayed signing a new deal, which has fuelled transfer talk.

Key Details on the Rumours

Tottenham’s Interest:

Spurs have been monitoring Van Hecke since the summer 2025 window, where they inquired about him but were rebuffed by Brighton. Under manager Thomas Frank, the club views him as a versatile defender who could play in a back three or four, adding physicality and set-piece strength to their backline.

This interest is partly driven by potential vulnerabilities if key starters like Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven face injuries or departures. Reports suggest Tottenham could offer significant bonuses to lure him, and medical experts predict he would pass a Spurs medical without issues, given his minor groin and head injuries last season were resolved without surgery.

Contract Situation and Valuation:

Van Hecke earns around £50,000 per week at Brighton, and the club is willing to make him their highest-paid player to extend his stay. However, his hesitation has boosted Tottenham’s hopes of securing him for less than his £44m market value. Brighton’s asking price was steep in the summer (around £43m), but with two years left on his deal, a winter move could be more feasible if no extension is signed.

Competition from Other Clubs:

Tottenham faces rivalry from Liverpool and Newcastle United, both of whom are tracking Van Hecke for a possible 2026 move. Liverpool sees him as long-term insurance post-Virgil van Dijk, while Newcastle wants added depth for Champions League ambitions. Bayern Munich has also been loosely linked in the past, but Premier League clubs appear to be the frontrunners.

Timeline:

No action happened before the summer 2025 deadline (which closed earlier in September), but sources expect concrete bids in January 2026 if Van Hecke’s contract talks stall further. Some reports even suggest a deal could be “one to keep an eye on” as early as the winter window.

Van Hecke has impressed with his aerial dominance, smart positioning and reliable passing, making him a tempting option for sides looking to strengthen at the back. Brighton has offered him a new deal that would make him one of the highest-paid players in the club’s history, but the player is reportedly keen to test himself at the Champions League level, which has left the situation wide open.

Liverpool are keeping close tabs after missing out on Marc Guehi. With uncertainty around Ibrahima Konaté’s future and Virgil van Dijk approaching the twilight of his career, the Reds are looking for a long-term solution. Van Hecke’s experience alongside Van Dijk in the national team setup could help ease the transition.

Despite having Romero and Van de Ven in their backline, Spurs are also monitoring Van Hecke to add depth. The club’s new sporting structure and the manager’s long-term plans suggest the Dutchman will be closely watched during the January window.

Newcastle, aiming to build a squad capable of competing in Europe, sees Van Hecke’s Premier League experience and physical profile as a perfect fit. His ability to slot into a high-intensity system makes him a strong candidate for their defensive rebuild.

Brighton has reportedly set a price tag of around £44 million. But with the contract ticking down and the player hesitant to commit, that figure could be negotiated. If no extension is agreed by 2026, Brighton risks losing him below market value.

Why Tottenham?

Van Hecke’s profile fits Frank’s tactical setup perfectly—he’s a Netherlands international with Premier League experience since joining Brighton in 2020. His breakout season highlighted his ball-playing ability and defensive solidity, making him an “incredible” upgrade for Spurs’ defence, which has shown vulnerabilities.

A move could also have ripple effects, potentially impacting Romero’s role if Van Hecke joins as another Dutch option alongside van de Ven.
