Tottenham Hotspur may have a key decision to make regarding Brennan Johnson’s future this summer, with reports suggesting a possible return to Nottingham Forest could be on the cards.
Spurs, currently struggling in 13th place in the Premier League, face an uncertain path toward European qualification.
Their best chance of securing a Champions League spot for next season lies in winning the Europa League, adding further urgency to their campaign.
According to The Athletic journalist Paul Taylor, Johnson would be open to rejoining Forest if they manage to qualify for the Champions League.
Steve Cooper’s side is currently third in the league, holding a five-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea. If they maintain their form, Forest could return to Europe’s biggest stage for the first time since the 1980–81 season.
However, Taylor also noted that while Forest may be interested in bringing Johnson back, the rise of Anthony Elanga on the right wing could make the move less straightforward, as the Swedish international has been a standout performer this season. As quoted via NottinghamForestNews, Taylor commented:
“I’d guess that he’d be more than happy to come back to Forest to play Champions League football, if they do manage to get themselves over the line for that, of course.
“But there might be a few more complicating factors involved. Not least the fact that Anthony Elanga has been a pretty exciting replacement for him. He has been brilliant down the Forest right.
“One more wide player/forward added to the mix would be very useful, of course, particularly one of Brennan’s quality.
“Would he get into the team right now? That’s a different question, or perhaps the question is where he would fit in. It’s definitely an interesting idea.”

Since making his £47.5 million move to Tottenham in September 2023, Johnson has grown into an important attacking asset for Ange Postecoglou’s side. He wasted little time making an impact, scoring his first goal against Wolves in November and finishing his debut campaign with five goals and ten assists—the highest assist tally among Spurs players.
Despite missing a month due to a calf injury, Johnson has stepped up this season. He is currently Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League alongside James Maddison, netting nine goals. Across all competitions, he has registered 14 goals and three assists in 38 appearances.
While Spurs see Johnson as a key figure for the future, the prospect of Champions League football with his boyhood club could test Tottenham’s resolve if Forest come calling this summer.
