There have been a number of great football commentators over the years and Sam Matterface isn’t one of them. “We needed Gary Lineker, but we got Chris Waddle” squawked Sam after the Harry Kane penalty miss. I can imagine that this didn’t sit well with a fair few England fans. By that stage, I had almost tuned the white-van-man-noise out, but there’s a point worth dwelling upon in respect of Matterface.

Not only is he a product of the lowest common denominator reportage, with his woefully lame pre-scripted one-liners, but he is also an individual that takes us full circle in my argument about broadcasters generally.

They’ve all lost sight of who their customers are and what their customers want.

The list of what the subscribers do want is remarkably short. High production values, coherent contributors, and intelligent presenters. Oh, and technically excellent broadcasting.

What nobody sat at home wants is this right-on rubbish that’s assaulting us every time we switch on our TV sets. We don’t need to be repeatedly told racism is a bad thing. Most of us agree that it is, and those that don’t, need an expensive and protracted diet of education and control. The reason, for the umpteenth time this is avoided, is that it’s expensive and doesn’t provide the same immediate endorphin hit that virtue signaling does.
