Surprising Tottenham summer signing branded “astute”

By Bruce Grove -

Paul Robinson believes that Joe Hart has been an “astute” signing for Tottenham after the former England number one displaced Paulo Gazzaniga as the club’s second choice.

Having struggled to see any game time during his last stint at Burnley, Hart was a surprising signing by Jose Mourinho who needed to meet the requirements on the quota for homegrown players in his team.

Hart has now become Tottenham’s second-choice goalkeeper, sitting only behind Hugo Lloris in the pecking order.

He has been used by the club in their Europa League campaign and he hasn’t disappointed so far.

Robinson, who was the number one at Spurs for some years thinks that the club did a very fine bit of business when they grabbed him for free from Burnley in the summer.

He told Football Insider: “Joe Hart has done exceptionally since he has come in.

“He has been given his opportunity in European games and a lot of teams sign English goalkeepers to fill their home-grown quota but in Joe Hart they have made a really astute signing.

“He has established himself as the club’s number two, ahead of Gazzaniga.

“He has already played more football this season than he did last season already.”

Hart will hope to keep playing and perhaps help win the Europa League for the club.

I agree with all of that, however what I’m saying is that i don’t see the other signings other than Bale and Reggie as upgrades on what we had.

Just depth really, and although I agree about PEH being a good signing, I feel it’s more because we’ve had absolutely nobody doing that job since Wanyama went into decline and Dier lost his way as a defensive midfielder.

Needed signings but not upgrades in my book.

Don’t forget Hojbjerg has been a good signing as well. Doherty hasn’t been played in the same position he played at Wolves as a wingback, but hasn’t let us down with the same mistakes Aurier was making. We are only 8 games in and he had a long season with Wolves starting in the EL qualifiers playing a lot of games without much of a break. He is also playing for Ireland and will get better with time getting to know his new Spurs teammates and what’s required with his new coach Jose. I think he has been steady without being spectacular like Reguilon.

‘Established himself as the club’s No2’ Eh? Jose established him as number 2 without him doing anything of note apart from not being Gazzaniga. Hart has done nothing to force his way in, Jose has forced Gazza out more like.

Gazza did well, however he’s a Poch man. Even comes from the same town in Argentina. I understand that Jose has his methods but he seems to be relegating and freezing players out that are pretty decent. I just don’t think we are in the market for massive upgrades, apart from Bale and Reggie the summer window demonstrated that. Hart for Gazza? Backwards move…

Have to agree.Gazza must be really disappointed to be unceremonially dumped in that way.I hope he gets a good move away and earns plenty of game time, the way Martinez has at Villa.

I have no idea why signing Joe Hart is seen as such a coup. He couldn’t even get in the Burnley side so how much pressure does he put on Loris exactly? He’s a decent and experienced backup like Vorm was, that’s about it.
