Tottenham’s plans to strengthen their midfield in the January transfer window have taken a hit, as Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka has reportedly decided to remain with the Bundesliga giants for the rest of the season.
The 29-year-old midfielder had been on Spurs’ radar as a potential addition to their squad, with his contract at Bayern entering its final two years.
However, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Goretzka is set to stay at Bayern under the leadership of manager Vincent Kompany.
Taking to X, Plettenberg shared the following:
“Leon Goretzka has decided to stay at FC Bayern through the winter and complete the season with the club. Highly motivated, he remains valued by coach Vincent Kompany. Despite interest from top clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham, and Napoli, Goretzka will not pursue a move in the January transfer window.”

Tottenham faced competition for the German international, with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Serie A side Napoli also showing interest in securing his services.
Since his arrival at Bayern in 2018, Goretzka has enjoyed a decorated career, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and lifting the Champions League trophy.
Renowned for his versatility, he has thrived in various midfield roles, showing his abilities as a box-to-box player and an advanced playmaker.
His exceptional ball control, sharp passing, and knack for scoring goals have made him a standout performer over the years.
This season, however, has been less prominent for Goretzka, as he has seen his role diminish under Kompany.
Despite making 14 appearances across all competitions, he has only started five games, recording two goals and one assist. Nevertheless, his expertise in dictating play and his well-timed runs into the penalty area remain vital attributes.
For Tottenham, Goretzka would have brought a unique blend of experience, technical skill, and leadership to Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.
While the club already boasts impressive talents like Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and James Maddison, the addition of a proven winner like Goretzka could have elevated their options significantly.
Though this transfer will not materialise, Spurs are expected to continue seeking reinforcements to enhance their squad depth and maintain their push for success on all fronts.
