Player expectations are so high that failure could be disastrous for Tottenham | Opinion

By Bruce Grove -

Harry Kane came out last night and stated that Tottenham can do something special this season and I absolutely agree with him.

However, there is a downside to such confidence from a player like Kane.

You see, if Tottenham do fail to win anything this season I have no doubts that Kane will be devastated and it would be understandable if he started questioning staying in N17.

Players like Kane and Son Heung-min want silverware, it is ok breaking records and scoring for fun but at the end of the season a bare cabinet will be hard to swallow.

It is brilliant that the players feel the way they do and that they now believe, however, those same players are realists and they will not want to stay at a club if the end result is the same every season.

This is a risky season for Spurs because all the ingredients are there now for success, Covid 19, no fans, key injuries to some of our opponents, average managers, and of course Gareth Bale back for Tottenham.

Add into all that a manager that has that “winning mentality” and you would have to ask in the event of failure, what more can be done, if not now, when?

I wrote an earlier article where I stated that winning only the Carabao Cup this season would be acceptable and I really do believe that and I am not so naïve to think that after just six games we can win the title, I am not an Arsenal fan after all, but I do believe that everything is in place for us to have a real good go at it.

In conclusion, it is fantastic that our players are so confident, that they can grind out results away to a team like Burnley on a Monday night in winter, that they can bounce back with two wins after collapsing against West Ham, that they can put five and six past Southampton and Man Utd respectively and that they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

But I am concerned what failure would mean for our main men, it really could be disastrous if we do not bring the bacon home in some form this season.

If Mourinho had not arrived and Bale this window then I think Kane may have definitely been looking to move next summer and Son as well. The importance of the Mourinho effect on this club cannot therefore be understated. His impact on the players and Levy have changed the entire persona of the club from where it was after the opening defeat to Everton. We still need a few additions so we don’t have to play the likes of Davies as a regular backup or Sissoko and Aurier. However, I think that with the arrival of Bale and Requilon along with Vinicius, Pierre, Docherty and Rodon there has been a quantum shift in the players mindset. They all have to battle for places. They have one of the most successful coaches to work with. They have amazing facilities and a world class stadium. I am beginning to believe that this season could be special and I think they all are as well. There is still work to be done especially defensively and I can see us adding players in January if we are pushing for honours by then. With the amount of criticism that Jose has had to endure from so called experts saying he was a busted flush I can imagine that he is beyond motivated to shove those words back down their throats by winning again.

Yes it’s a strange season for sure, several teams could win it this year.

Ok it’s early days but I’d settle for being only 2pts behind the leaders at this stage!

Be nice to get the carabao cup under our belt nice and early which will relax us for another bigger trophy to follow.

Aim high win high> Assuming 5 games to go and we are the topping the table, a lovely position to be in, the pressure will be unbearable which is where the obvious winning mentality of the manager and players self belief / mental resolve comes into the equation to see it though.

All campaigns are important but by general consensus (if it is Kane’s swansong) then given the level of transfer activity this season more than most is a PIVOTAL SEASON winning some elusive silverware!

Yes we will be expected to win silverware this season finally, and failure to do so could indeed have worrying circumstances. There’s no excuses now as you say.
