Conte is gone in the summer. He knew that with Lloris, Kane, Son and a few other decent players he could get Spurs into top 5 and be declared a genius. Even with Dier and Davies he could beat everyone outside top 6. He’s also paid well. Manure will get Rice in the summer. If they also get Haaland, Conte is definitely joining. Spurs is just a temporary gig. We’ll end up with the sinister looking German in his place.

Kulusevski and the other fella would be virtually a re-fit of our central midfield. Apparently Kulusevski can play wide but his preferred position is attacking midfield behind the forwards and the other one is a deeper lying midfielder. So despite the perception that our main problems lie elsewhere, it seems Conte is far from happy with our current midfield options…

This transfer window has confirmed all those worst case assumptions about the way this club is run by the owners. The reality is we have no recruitment strategy. Paratici is just a figurehead as DOF to deflect the gaze away from Levy but he has no authority to make signings. When Conte joined it was hoped that Levy and ENIC had finally realised that the only option was to allow Paratici and Conte to identify targets and to go and get them. That implied that by the end of December they would have these targets lined up and with three fixtures against Chelsea scheduled in January they would get these targets into the first team in early January so they could help the club in these fixtures. However that appears to not have been the case. Nothing of any substance happened apart from a continuance of the Traore rumours from last summer and we went into those three fixtures with Chelsea and were embarrassingly poor in all of them. You could sense Conte’s growing frustration. Then apparently we were suddenly chasing Diaz after Traore got fed up with Levy’s usual low balling and allowed Barcelona to step in and make us look like the shambles we are. Once again Levy low balled and this time Liverpool stepped in and took the player from under our noses making the club look like a complete fiasco. Conte was probably exploding behind the scenes and Levy panicked at the thought of the fans reaction so told Paratici to get on a plane to Italy and drag in any players he could at the cheapest cost to look as if we were doing something. These players were clearly not part of any structured strategy to improve the team but once again another last minute attempt to keep the fans onside. I am not sure this will keep Conte onside however. What this all demonstrates is that we have no recruitment plan. Paratici is another front man for Levy with limited impact, Conte as a world class manager will realise that this club is a disaster as a football club with owners who have no intent or interest in making the football club successful and may well have his agent speaking with Man Utd before the summer. Levy still has his micro managing fingerprints over every action involving money transactions around players. Nothing has changed and nothing will until we have new owners who recognise that success financially is lockstep with winning titles and attracting world class players. If you remain unconvinced just reflect on the fact that even with a billion dollar stadium we cannot secure a deal for a non league player.

Less than 40m for Diaz is a bargain, even if he flops they can recoup a decent chunk of that and not lose out on more than a few million. If he’s a success in the PL then an even more incredible deal. A world class winger would usually be in excess of 50m and that’s what they would have paid in the summer if they had waited. Classic example of Levy trying to look busy and pulling the wool over supporters’ eyes once again.

Poch said, give me the money and I’ll be here for twenty years. We have needed fresh, experienced, winning quality for years, so you know you are bang on, but experienced quality costs. Just forget it and hope and pray we do a Newcastle. Just look at their acquisitions already and watch them go, they will bid us out of sight. That is without Man City, Cheatski, Man Utd, Liverpool and even Woolwich. We are going nowhere, just upper mid-table fodder, have been for 35 years except for a few seasons with a genius called Poch who Danny and Joe manged to push too far in the end.

Liverpool see the need to bring in players with the likes of Salah and Mane with only 18 months left on their deals. Firminho already replaced by Jota, THIS is how you run a football club. You have a plan of succession, you back a manager and keep him.

Levy laughably claimed that “managers just don’t stay at clubs like Wenger or Ferguson did” after sacking Pochettino. That’s probably because the game is now full of non-football people like Levy, who don’t care about winning anything so long as the punters keep turning up.

Liverpool’s owners Fenway also run the Boston Red Sox, a successful sports brand in the US. It was built on winning and the prestige that goes with all of that. They are obviously trying to do the same at Liverpool.

No low-balling nonsense, just a plan of knowing who you want and need, and then going out and getting them. This business with Diaz really demonstrates the chasm between the setups at both clubs.

Levy actually wanted to “weport” Liverpool’s recruitment team to their bosses for being ‘naughty’ and nipping in to get Diaz! Unbelievable, the man is completely out of touch with the realities of top level football…

It’s all about COMPETING, you f*cking dick head!

A 19 year old non-league player, Ollie Tanner, at Lewes with a transfer fee agreed between Levy and his club, has turned Spurs down! Incredible! Terms not agreed, Levy tried to low-ball the player obviously. Says it all, Conte may see out his contract, then we are back to square one where even the players would rather be elsewhere, never mind the coaches. We should squeeze in some cheapies over the next two days and be moaning about their lack of quality as next months new dead-wood make their presence painfully felt. Never mind the Woolwich, Cheatski and many, many others splitting their sides, even I am beginning to laugh. Have to, or I may just lose my sanity! Liverpool, six times European Champions, far bigger prestige, win things, better wages, I can see the footballers point. But a couple of hundred quid a week bloody non-leaguer? We have really gone down the pans, hope Bill Nick does not see this bless him, he would flip.

Wrong,my dad is a die hard juve supporter so I follow them. Fabio is the king of Juve,he together with Marotta and Andre Agnelli were the reasons for Juve success. Sure Marotta brought in Fabio at that time as head scout. But the amount of new players that Fabio brought in that no on was looking at was remarkable. Obviously they will get it wrong a few times. But he and Conte work together. We would not have signed Conte without Fabio. Let us not kid ourselves

It’s all utter boll*x. Fabio does what he told by Daniel Levy. He spends what he’s told by Daniel Levy. He negotiates with what he’s told to negotiate with by Daniel Levy. You can paint it up any way you like, but Daniel Levy runs every aspect of the transfer set-up at this club. Paratici’s role is redundant. Was from the start and , always will be. He’s a fall guy and a waste of time.

Exactly my point, yes totally agree. I can’t see thst any of this three do that. In fact it sort of explains why he’s tried to use Winks more than most expected, because he does have a bit more vision and a pass than either PEH or Skipp.

I totally agree. A quality box-to-box midfielder can significantly improve a team’s attacking play. Roma, for instance, just signed Sérgio Oliveira from Porto and his impact was immediate. Not only did he manage 2 goals + 1 assist in his first 2 matches, but, on the whole, Roma are also a lot more threatening with him on the pitch. Their attackers get better service, the team doesn’t lose possession as often and, consequently, they manage to create more chances. 7 goals in 2 matches since he came in! That’s the difference between having a guy who can pass a ball and think attacking moves from the midfield and playing with Hojberg, Skipp and Winks…

Conte played his ‘strongest’ eleven pretty much in the cup against Chavski yet we still fell woefully short. Therefore why would anyone feel that any position in the side isn’t in need of improvement?

I don’t believe our central midfield is good enough, a 15m bargain from Saints and an academy product who did very well on loan in the Championship last season? Is that alone really going to be enough to compete with the likes of Citeh, Liverpool, Chelsea or even Utd over the course of a season? I believe that both PEH and Skipp should stay but we probably do need other options in there if we are honest.

We can all flag up how bad Royal has been or how none of our attacking midfielders aren’t up to it etc, but that can often cloud the judgement of the rest of the team, that are actually getting picked. So if we are in for deeper lying midfielders, then why not?

East Stand
East Stand

Reply to  Billy Tonsils

The two Juventus players (who I suspect we loan as they can’t get game there) are both box to box or defensive central midfield players.

We can’t fill the positions we need to so Paratici has gone back to his mates at Juventus and asked to borrow a couple of bodies to we can say we’ve got a couple of players in this window.

Possibly could use one if LoCelso and Belly leave to compete for a place but this is clearly not the position we need reinforcements or improvement in. It might also mean that Conte isn’t as convinced about PEH, Winks and Skipp as many other people.

Personally I agree, I don’t believe that any of them possess the quality to get into a top level midfield, which is often where matches are won and lost. They’re all too limited and one dimensional. People say that Conte plays ‘defensive’ midfielders but there’s a huge difference between a ‘complete’ midfield player and an incomplete one. Perhaps he feels they need a wider skill set and an ability to press better to implement his style better?

Giuseppe Marotta was on charge from May 2010 to October 2018. He helped Juventus from Europa league failures to twice champions league runners up, in the space of 5-7 years.

Also Giuseppe’s first managerial appointment at Juventus was non other than Antonio Conte. The first manager to start Juventus’ run of Serie A dominance.

Plus when Giuseppe took over at Inter in December 2018. The first thing he did when the 18/19 season ended was to sack Luciano Spalletti and hire Antonio Conte.
Now Inter have Simone Inzaghi and there success is continuing, after most people thought it would end once Conte left. But the reason its continued is because of Giuseppe, he knows what he’s doing.

I feel Fabio might be living of association and working alongside Levy, probably has exposed him. It was only outside Italy Fabio was getting praise.

We need an experienced central defender, happy in a back three. We need a right wing-back and we need a creative forward or ‘number 10’.

Just three players, haven’t got to be 21 or under and haven’t got to have huge sell on potential. If Paratici can’t get that together then he might as well do one…

Just watched Sporting’s win over Benfica in the Portuguese league cup final. Spanish u-21 international (RWB) Pedro Porro came off the bench (after being sidelined for over a month due to injury) at the 60 mins mark to completely bulldoze Benfica’s defence. Won Sporting the match with a key pass. Verts will have nightmares for a week. Porro, not Diaz, is THE January signing I’d definitely make from the Portuguese League. To say he’d be a massive upgrade on Royal and Doherty would be the understatement of the year. He is everything they are not: fast; technical; attacking-minded. Fans took to calling him “El Toro” (the bull) due to the way he constantly charges at the opposition’s defence. The boy does not believe in back-passing.

Spanish international Pablo Saravia (on loan from PSG), Porro’s “companion” on Sporting’s right side (and today’s MOTM), would, in my opinion, also improve our quality in the final third. What’s more, Sporting’s tactical setup is practically identical to Conte’s, which could prove pretty useful for a January signing. With Sergio, Son, Kane, Pablo and Porro we would have some serious firepower at our disposal.

Thats the way he probably does it, if there is no DOF in place. The manager has no one to go to apart from Levy himself. But if a DOF is place then they have a list of players then it seems like Levy still has the final sign off anyway. So pointless to have DOF in place if you’re still controlling exactly who should be signed or not.

I know but it’s a current article that is talking about Levy in general. Not done by a PR team.what I’m trying to say is that managers had their say on the transfers. We are not clutching at straws but from the article we are getting a definite answer that Levy allows managers to recommend and choose players. Something that is done at every club in the world. The only difference is Levy is a stingy bastard and useless at his job,we all know that. That does not need to be mentioned ,his name mentioned brings up all those emotions attached to it. But let us not allow past managers to escape criticism for their own transfer blunders

Whatever we do in this transfer window, or the next, or the next, or the next will bring the same net result under ENIC, as it always has done. Treading water, adding to the asset values, winning nothing.

I honestly think ENIC thought they could continue this charade forever and a day. The stadium debt repayments will be based on this idea.that we don’t ‘overspend’ on the football team.

Not a single fan asked for the stadium, there was no opinion poll, no consultation or either the benefits or drawbacks set out for all to consider.

I think the Frank Arnesen interview is quite telling. Essentially DL hires people to identify the targets and then he steps in to negotiate. He doesn’t trust anyone else with the petty cash tin.

Look, none of what is done at Tottenham works. It never has and it never will.

We must have the longest list of disgruntled players in the league. If Lo Celso goes don’t be surprised if Romero isn’t too far behind him. Players talk and we only have him on loan, remember!

The players we are now targeting are players that clubs are happy to let go. Sure, we loan out Dele & Ndombele but as far as improvements go it’s just switching from left pocket to right pocket. There is no gain for Conte.

Players don’t want chaos, they want managerial stability and a plan. The summer debacle over a manager was a clear demonstration that there is no plan whatsoever. Levy’s regular appointments of Directors Of Football over the years have been an attempt to create the impression there there is a plan, beyond the anti-football, spreadsheet realities of Levy’s mindset.

Franks right of course.. Levy knows nothing about football. Imagine if he was scouting the players, choosing his targets, picking the teams. We’d be relegated immediately… Our scouting has been poor for many years, Levy is to blame for not changing Hitchen and his minions ages ago. Problem number 1, Levy is boss and is far too slow. Staff and players should be moved on years earlier. Problem number 2 is his negotiations. Aside from the rare Levy time success (Edgar Davids and Van der Vaart) he fails consistently. By low balling, hard balling, annoying, dithering and taking too long to pull the trigger. From Morientes and Rivaldo, to Grealish and Luis diaz…. At the end of the day Levy walks up to the table with his credit card and he decides whether to spend or not… Problem number 3 now is what Roy Keane told everyone last week. No top player would want to come to Spurs.. I still hope Conte will be able to attract some players he wants in the summer. But Roys words have been echoing in my head all week.

A few months ago, Udinese signed 23-yo Beto from Portimonense for EUR 10 mil. 8 goals in 12 full matches for them now and already on Milan’s radar.
