Despite the emotional and psychological difficulties of their beloved fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone passing away last week, Tottenham found the spirit and the focus to bounce back from last week’s surprise 0-0 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt by winning away to in-form Brighton.
A visibly emotional Spurs manager Antonio Conte dedicated the result to Ventrone, a man who Conte said… “was in the heart of every single Tottenham person”.
Sometimes these moments can turn a campaign on its head, and that’s precisely what Tottenham will be praying for here, after mixed results have left their three remaining UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage games as crucial ones – which is the last thing Conte needed after implying to the media that his squad lacked the depth to be successful in multiple competitions this season.
After dealing Spurs a minor shock last week, Frankfurt were handed a 3-0 drubbing by the previously winless Bochum, whilst also becoming the first club in this Bundesliga season to fail to score against Bochum.
They slipped back out of the Bundesliga top six as a result, whilst four scoreless efforts from their last seven games across all competitions must be a concern for manager Oliver Glasner.
Courtesy of their 1-0 win at Marseille a month ago, Frankfurt remains unbeaten in seven UEFA away fixtures (W6, D1) after last season becoming just the third team in history to complete a UEFA Europa League campaign without a loss.
Perhaps most alarmingly for Tottenham, that includes five wins from five starts as travelling outsiders – including a 3-2 triumph at Camp Nou – which serves as another reminder that they cannot be taken lightly.
Players to watch: Tottenham midfielder Ivan Perišić has scored in two separate victories against Frankfurt for two clubs, and would be delighted to return to the scoresheet after three assists in all competitions during September. His Croatian compatriot, Frankfurt’s Kristijan Jakić, scored a goal the last time he played a full 90 minutes away from home (at Stuttgart).
Hot stat: Only one of the six Group D games in the 2022/23 UCL have seen both teams score.
He has had 40 mins in a year..
Not the NFL ..the football team.
Already is an afterthought.NFL has a worse head injury issue than ‘soccer’. I don’t see it as future proof. The Americans are in denial about it so far…
Chillax – they will let us play there when there are no NFL games.
that’s what she said
Catch that pigeon
one word is all you need.
Rangers are a pub team, compared to any team in the top half of the English Premiership…
The summer transfer window didn’t improve our starring eleven, yet it was weirdly hyped as a sign of intent and the backing of Conte. Utter drivel…
If only. There no way they would get chosen over a state of the art purpose built NFL stadium which is currently hosting all the games in England. The yanks love the ENIC dome.
MK Dons Stadium ..why do they have a 35 000 seater stadium.
Well well….all the flack taken few years back. Maybe not today…maybe not tomorrow i said…NFL head Roger goddell has spoken of plans for and international division. Yep.thats what the stadium was always about. The real team will one day move in and the football team (sorry , soccer) , the “anchor tenant ” will finally become what it was always ENIC’S intention for it to be. An afterthought.
………..agree but Lloris should also get credit – he does know that he can take the ball using TWO hands?
That was nearly tragic. The defending at the end was U14 level.
He’s a box of tadpoles
Emerson must he really really must have pics of Conte sticking something where he shouldn’t be sticking something ..after the arse shambles he still picks.him..Spence best right full in championship last year nd not even gets few min ..some of Conte’s decisions nd substitutions are farcical Tbh.
Well, that nearly went all Spursy… 🤦🏼♂️
Exactly. Skipp didn’t look too good either.
Spot on. I’ve seen enough, just get rid
Playing out from the back with Sanchez and Royal is suicide. Dropped off completely after Bentancur came off which proves how valuable he is. I’ve said it before, Bissouma was the wrong signing. Need an AM in January. If either Bentancur or PEH gets injured we’re fecked
How to finish a game from 3-1 up.
Spurs: concede one against 10 men, scrape a 3-2 win.
Liverpool: score 4 more for a 7-1 thrashing.
I was trying to imagine Bill Nick’s reaction to Lucas very carefully dribbling the ball out of play.
Yup, you thought you’d got the punchline but no…there was more
Resting the players worth it in the end though – and trying to get Skipp and Moura to remember what a football is (no evidence they do based on that last 15 minutes)
What a crazy world.
This lot got smashed 3-0 by Bochum at the weekend (1st team not to score against Bochum). Then they score 2 at NWHL. Although apparently they are very good away in Europe whereas we are not very good home or away.
Undecided 😂 but I’ll forever remember the passage of play where Gil fell over the ball when clean through, the Frankfurt player backheeled it back to him, then there was some good work to get us the penalty – only for Kane to balloon it over the bar.
Too many Clowns . If Frankfurt had scored all you could do is laugh.
Only Spurs can go defensive and drop deep when the opposition is down to ten men. Royal is a total shambles. He conceded the corner then failed to challenge for the cross. Utter dross, Get rid of. How many chances does Conte give him? IF he is the best of our rwb choices then that is a shocking indictment of our summer transfer window
Back to Earth with a bump for them come the weekend though
Worth it for the lols?
Enjoyable game on many levels.
Haven’t laughed that much in ages, the Laurel and Hardy routine those last ten minutes was golden.
This needed one (1) grown-up on the pitch to see the game out with little to no nerves. Instead, we got this.
Liverpool had fun tonight.
Pathetic
Donuts 3 sausages 2
Same old Spurs…I don’t think any of these players have ever played with each other before, truly a ‘who’s that?’ of the squad
Oh my lord blow the whistle
I have a headache.
Same old Spurs
Conte hopping mad
Some atrocious decision making on display currently. Farcical stuff.
gill ?? Oh fook knows , harry misses???
Wacky Races finish to this one
Kane thought it was a freekick
Kane lol
What is going on
Maura😂
the games gone mad
Bryan Gil is a box of frogs
Oh the irony.Royal bollocking Sanchez for a poor touch.
Hahaha that’s on Conte for inviting pressure….That was obvious.. should of made like for like subs not taking off our attacking players for defensive midfielders
Got to make us sweat
Down to 10 men, we make some “interesting” subs, and now we are holding on at 3-2. Say what you like about Dier but he is an aerial presence in the box.
Did the commentators really just suggest that Sess is somehow outperforming Perisic, and that’s why he’s playing?
I wonder at Conte’s man management sometimes. Will he ever have a better time to give Spence 5 minutes?
Or perhaps that’s him at full pelt which is more concerning
Sess jogging back twice when Frankfurt broke. Not good enough.
Unleash the Spence!
What’s Conte doing with these subs? Just inviting pressure… I wouldn’t be surprised if they scored again…
#FreeSpenceN17
Good Skippy is getting a run out
Royal has nothing in his locker. Each time he’s in a forward position he looks for a short pass somewhere. He gets in good positions, but does nothing with it.
Now subbed off. Got away with one for sure.
100% and the ref fell for it 🤷🏻♂️
Just give Spence a chance
Hasebe doing the old “pretend you’re hurt and maybe he’ll forget to produce the second yellow”
I think Dier has been good apart from the obvious mistake for the goal.
Yes! We’ll leave Son on, but rest Kane.
Keep sonny player, see if he can keep it going
Spence on for Emerson FFS. Try him out.
What are we doing with corners recently, the short ones are awful
Touché
Rest Kane and Son at this point?
They were terrible before, they’re only bad now
This commentator really just said “every footballer looks to be a better version of themselves. Look at what Conte did to Dier, Royal, Sessegnon…and others.”
Not the three I would pick, but okay!
That’s what Richarlison does. He’s a pain in the arse to defend against
Ricky…finally…Sess..pfft!!
I’ll give you that, but still not sure..
Tis true… the game of the working man was priced out long long ago. No meat pies and a cup of bovril at half time anymore
Son and Kane look sharp but Dier and Emerson are just accidents waiting to happen. We desperately need another quality CB alongside Romero and a decent RWB, ATM and another top-quality striker.
Romero needs a better partner, that’s for sure. Dier is another Maguire in the making
Just saw it on the replays. Not a fan of us passing the ball across the face of the goal, but that was a horrible, awful first touch.
👍
Conceded the ball in the box. They scored
Said to a guy on the YouTube channel earlier, this business of the ‘average fan’ is baloney, the average fan these days is a solicitor, in marketing or a tourist!
One terrible pass, but apart from that he’s been mint
I had the same feeling when we equalized that I had when they scored. We just have too many Clowns and it ain’t changing.
Turned it on at 0-1. What was Dier up to this time?
Good response and cracking goal by Son. Dier and Royal are the weakest links. Can’t wait for Doherty to get back into the team which says a lot. Sessegnon ain’t great, but not too shabby. Richarlison has to get more involved. His first touch is usually okay, but too many misplaced passes, that needs to improve.
seen It a lot this season , a defender passes through 2 opposing players to a midfielder who only needs to turn and they’re off but they choose to pass back putting the defender under pressure.
winds me up.
Bentancur playing very well
He’s been a pain in their arse all the half so far. The ball he just played for Emerson was class. Had Kane played the same ball people would be jizzing their pants
Need wingbacks that can pass then .
Still not sure Richy adds a great deal..Royal would be a decent player if he could pass!! Decent half in spells and cracking goal..
Library 2 😳
Behave 😂
Game over rover
Would like to see Kane score a few from open play…
Oooh yeah. That’s more like it from Sonny.
Big shout out to PEH also.
Sometimes conceding early is the best thing for this side…actually gets them to up the intensity.
