Jamie Carragher says Tottenham can’t challenge with this player in the line-up

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been criticised for his performances in recent months.

The 35-year-old bookkeeper made costly error against teams like Arsenal and Newcastle United in recent weeks and former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher believes that the Frenchman is not good enough for Tottenham anymore.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher said: “For me – and I’ve thought this for years – I know he’s a World Cup winner; the goalkeeper’s not good enough.

“In terms of getting Tottenham to really challenging, I don’t think he’s good enough.

“I haven’t got a name for you, but if you actually look at what happened with Man City when they brought Ederson in, you see Liverpool when they brought Alisson in.

“He makes too many mistakes.

“I just don’t think right now, Antonio Conte, he’s brought attacking players in – he needs a top centre-back, he needs a top goalkeeper. And the way he plays has proven successful over the years.”

Lloris has been a key player for the London club since 2012 but his regression over the past year is evident and the Premier League side will have to sign a long-term replacement for the World Cup winner.

Spurs have linked with players like Robert Sanchez in recent weeks and it will be interesting to see who they end up signing eventually.

Lloris is currently in his twilight years and he is clearly not the player he used to be. It makes sense for Antonio Conte to address the goalkeeping weakness in the squad.

The Italian is an ambitious manager who will look to win the major trophies at Tottenham and he cannot hope to achieve his goals without fixing the glaring weaknesses in his squad.

Apart from a goalkeeper, Tottenham should look to sign a quality centre back and right back as well.

Meanwhile, Lloris will have one year left on his contract with Tottenham at the end of this season and the Frenchman will be hoping to work hard and get back to his best during the second half of the campaign.
