‘I hold him responsible’ – Ljungberg says only one Tottenham player is to blame for last night

By Saikat -

Tottenham played out a 1-1 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League last night.

The Premier League side could have won the game had it not been for an error from club captain Hugo Lloris. The 35-year-old French international should have done better for the goal he conceded and Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg has now hit out at the World Cup winner for his performance on the night.

He said on CBS Sports on Paramount+ (26th October 2022, at 08:55 pm), as quoted by HITC: “It was a quick play. Gomes goes into the middle of the park, it’s a long, long way out for Edwards.

“But I am sorry, Lloris you need to do better on that, especially when there is so much at stake.

“He has struggled a bit lately. I hold him responsible for the first one, then doing this (when he came out of his box) at the end of the game, sorry Lloris, that’s not good decision-making.”

Former Tottenham player Marcus Edwards impressed against the Londoners last night and his long-range effort managed to creep into the goal following a mistake from Lloris. Tottenham did well to get back into the contest thanks to a goal from Rodrigo Bentancur, but they will be left wondering what could have been if they had not conceded in the first half.

The English club have picked up eight points from five group games so far.

The 35-year-old Tottenham goalkeeper has not been at his best this season and this is not the first time he has been criticised for making a mistake that has cost his side. It’s clear that Lloris is past his peak now and it will be interesting to see whether Spurs can bring in a quality alternative next season.

The London club have been linked with a number of players in recent months.

The 35-year-old Tottenham goalkeeper is nearing the end of his contract at the club and he will be a free agent in the summer of 2024

The Londoners signed Fraser Forster on a free transfer at the start of the season but the former Southampton goalkeeper is in his twilight years and he cannot be considered as a long-term solution for Antonio Conte’s side.
