I am rooting for England, too family ties living in Watford and next the Spurs Stadium. That being said. I played and coached the game so watching the setup tells me Southgate is to stay compact and see what happen. The longer the game is even the greater England chances grow.
Watching the matches, as I do, in far away land, with the football anchor for ‘SportKlub’ TV… I hear similar comments… Grealish doesn’t have the defensive qualities for the type of match Southgate wants to play and is more of an impact sub when the match has ‘opened up’ nearer the final whistle. That’s from someone who watches and discuses football day in and day out… and is neutral as far as England are concerned.

We should be pushing at least two existing central defenders out of the door, and so I don’t see Rodon getting shuffled further down the pack. Even if we bring in two new quality CD’s – Nuno is liable to play 3 CDs at the back… and that means Rodon will have more playing chances.
I think Grealish is doing well as an impact sub on the hour mark if we need a goal, gets plenty of space to do his thing by then. No need to rock the boat at this stage.
Good analysis and something for those screaming for Grealish to be on from the off to think about.

Grealish or Mason Mount? I wrote here before that Southgate has no interest in what is attractive footbal. In tournaments you want to feel a team to win 7 games even if it is ugly, no one cares or will remember. He is solid at the back and very cable up the middle. Because Grealish does not play central it is very hard for me to see him and not Mount who is a better defender and does track back deeper than Jack. He is the man at Villa meaning where ever he is the ball must get to him hence why he is so effective. Grealish on the national team does not have that clout even with his talent and the fact Southgate will play 3 holding mids then reply on Sterling and Sancho movement up top to create goals. Throw Luke Shaw in and that is how he has been winning. I do not see Grealish in the starting 11, but rather at the 70th minute mark hopefully not because England is down. England does not have a genuine #8. As a matter of fact football is lacking them, Eriskssen, De Bruyne and Modric are 3 most accomplished 8s in the game and none plays for England so i understand the dilemma. The best thing England has going is they have not fallen behind and must chase the game. I expect Frankenstein against Demark not prince charming.
