Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the move for the Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in recent months.
The 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder was a target for Tottenham during the January transfer window as well and the North London club are expected to make a move for him in the summer.
Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has now revealed that Gallagher would improve Tottenham’s starting lineup and Chelsea should look to tie him down to a new contract. It will be interesting to see if the Blues can convince the player to sign a new deal with them. There have been rumours of a potential contract extension for months but the two parties have not been able to iron out an agreement.
“They’d be silly not to [tie him down],” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“For what he’s done this season, he covers every blade of grass and he’s exactly what you need at times, just that kind of battler in midfield. He’s technically gifted as well, he’s not just a runner.
“They’re talking about big money as well, would Chelsea sell him to a rival? For example, at Spurs, he probably makes their squad and starting team even better even though it would be a fight to get into the team.”
Tottenham need more depth and quality in the middle of the park and Gallagher would be a quality acquisition for them. He will add more work-rate, pressing ability and defensive cover to the side. The 24-year-old has been a key player for Chelsea this season and he has captained them multiple times.
The player could prove to be an upgrade on the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if Tottenham manage to sign him.
Chelsea are unlikely to secure European qualification for the next season, and a move to Tottenham will allow Gallagher to compete at the highest level. On the other hand, Tottenham are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification for the next season and it remains to be seen whether they come forward with an official approach for the player in the coming months.
