Tottenham defender Emerson Royal has had a disappointing time since joining the club and his performances have been criticised heavily.
The 23-year-old has not been too convincing defensively and his attacking output has been below par as well.
Royal put in another disappointing showing against Liverpool on Sunday. Spurs crashed to a 2-1 defeat at home to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Brazilian attempted three crosses during the game, none of which reached its intended target. He was replaced by Matt Doherty later on in the game.
Speaking after the game, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Weir shared his disappointment with the Brazilian’s performance.
Weir explained that Royal is simply not good enough for Tottenham.
He said: “Look, Royal is not good enough to be playing for Tottenham. I don’t think we can’t defend him any longer.
“He’s just so poor on the ball. His delivery is appalling. There was a moment when he got in a really good position in the second half in acres of space on the right and just put a cross completely out for a goal kick.”
It will be interesting to see if Spurs decide to upgrade on him in the coming months. Apart from Royal, Doherty has been underwhelming as well.
On the other hand. Djed Spence was signed in the summer but he has not managed to earn Conte’s trust.
The right-back position has been a constant worry for Conte this season and it remains to be seen whether the Italian decides to dip into the transfer market in January for a new right-back.
Conte’s system requires high-performing wing backs and Royal’s performance has not been up to the mark. Having a mediocre wing back is hugely detrimental to the system. The Londoners will need to sort out that weakness if they want to challenge for the major honours in the coming months.
Weir could say the same thing about the entire defence. They are all atrocious.
