Former Tottenham player Alan Hutton has given his opinion on the ongoing situation surrounding Antonio Conte at the club.
Hutton spoke to Football Insider about the pressure Conte is facing and the “strange situation” that has arisen due to his contract running down.
Hutton noted that the season has been up and down for Tottenham, with the club facing another trophyless season.
Conte was brought to the club to win something, and so far, that has not happened. Hutton is not sure if Tottenham will even make the top four this season.
He told Football Insider:
“It is a really strange one.”
“Conte is obviously under pressure as well. He was brought to the club to win something and that is not happening. As it stands are they going to get top four? I am not so sure.
“He is questioning the players’ mentality. He is a winner, he has proven that, the players have not for a number of years. His contract is running down and it is a very strange situation.“
“The season has been up and down, yet again it is going to be a trophyless season so it is difficult for supporters.”
Conte’s recent outburst at the players after their 3-3 draw with Southampton has raised concerns about his future at the club.
The Italian coach questioned the mentality and commitment of the players and criticised their ability to play under pressure.
Conte also appeared to take a swipe at the owners, claiming they had not won anything for a long time.
The Italian has a reputation of a serial winner, having won a trophy with every club he has managed. Failure to win one at Tottenham suggests a lack of ambition on the part of the club.
According to a report by Football Insider, Conte’s outburst was triggered by the club’s refusal to sign Romelu Lukaku and Stefan De Vrij in the summer.
Conte wanted proven world-class players to help end the club’s trophy drought, while the club preferred young players with potential.
The situation at Tottenham is uncertain, with reports suggesting the club could sack Conte during the international break.
