“Over The Bonnet Of A Car”

By The Boy -

Dame Julie Welch is Tottenham Hotspur aristocracy.

I’ve still no idea why she agreed to do take part. Perhaps two and a half decades of Fleet Street decadence lowered the glory glory gal’s defenses.

The chat with ODM and myself really doesn’t do Ms Welch justice. Don’t get me wrong, we had a go, she’s clearly laughing with us, not at us on more than one occasion…

…but Julie Welch is not only a gateway to a time sadly unknown or much fogotten, to so many, but she’s an incisive and gifted commentator on the modern game.

In 1969 Julie became Fleet Street’s first female football reporter. Thank goodness for that. Truly.

Just because she was there, excellently reporting on Dave McKay back then, doesn’t mean she’s now behind glass in some museum. Heh, far from it. What a woman

We were worried about about the quality of the tape as the chat was recorded at her publishers and that unhinged lunatic only fell shy of playing the steel drums at one point. Bloody Wimbledon fans, what can you do?

But we won the editing war, Toby. Know that, infidel…
