…On The Left Wing.
45 shots and one goal so far [a cross blessed by Allah], is concrete evidence that I was mistaken about his development. He’s not yet quite as good as we might wish him to be.
What we have in actual fact, is a outfield Defoe. Which given the gust of hopelessness that I exhale every time the Midget Gem’s name pops up these days, doesn’t auger well.
Take the ball. To hell with any thought lateral or otherwise. Forward. Get within shooting range, make a yard, make a yard, ping, wince. Oh babes.
The inverted winger thing is something I’ve never seen the benefit of, unless used mid game, in the old swaperoo, to cause confusion. Townsend taking the field these days produces the opposite of confusion. He’s a busted flush. Not only does even your average jobbing left back know he’s going to cut left, but now so also do most centre backs and defensive midfielders.
Andros is regarded, or more accurately, Andros is “perceived” as a a dynamic, creative, player. But I’d contest that. I won’t deride his effort or commitment, nobody should.
But he’s not actually achieving very much. The runs, most of the time, fail to achieve any more than a corner or a throw in. And this the same underlying aetiology reflected in Bonzo’s play.
I must have said this a bazillion times. Bonzo take the ball from deep, runs like champion into the final third and ….. zip. 99% of the time he ends up fiddling about once he gets there and all advantage is lost.
Gaining a throw in or a corner, per se isn’t a disaster. But I am suggesting it is that is symptomatic of a failure. A failure to get a proper return from a lot of our attacking play.
There’s an excellent piece on our woes here, that I’d like to point you to on Spurs Fanatic. Here the author has delivered a rare thing, a Spurs blog based upon rational thought and a tasty dash of Opta.
If André continues with Townsend on the left, or at least continues to indulge him in the same manner on the left, then we’re regressing. Bale’s papering over the cracks routine only worked because of his ability to pull stellar strikes out of his locker. Like it, loathe it or lump it that’s where were where. He carried us.
We now have a potentially, quite glorious squad. All we need is the glory. One trick ponies will only inhibit that glory.
