Tottenham attacker labelled as ‘failure’ in scathing attack

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham completed the signing of young striker Alejo Veliz last summer.

Arriving from Rosario Central in a €15 million deal and signing a six-year contract, Veliz’s potential appeared promising.

The 20-year-old made only 8 appearances in the Premier League this season, totalling just 42 minutes of action.

He scored his debut goal against Brighton last December. However, he suffered an injury which against Bournemouth in January, which turned out to be his last game for Spurs this season.

In order to aid his development and secure more playing time, Veliz was loaned out to Sevilla until the end of the season. However, his spell in Spain is not going to plan.

While Veliz undeniably possesses talent, Spanish news outlet Diario de Sevilla launched a scathing attack on the player as well as Sevilla’s Director of Football, Victor Orta, for signing him.

Describing the youngster as a ‘failure’ of a signing due to his limited contribution, the criticism also extended to the lack of playing time provided by manager Quique Sanchez Flores.

The report also raised questions about Orta’s decision to sign Veliz on loan without negotiating an option to buy, expressing frustration at the prospect of developing a player from another club without reaping benefits in return.

Since he arrived in Spain, the centre-forward has only made 3 appearances and seen just 23 minutes of action on the pitch, struggling to find his footing.

As of now, all three parties involved in the deal – Tottenham, Sevilla, and Veliz – aren’t benefiting from the arrangement.
