‘we still need…’: Postecoglou outlines the January transfer priority for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have had their fair share of injury problems in recent weeks and they will need to improve the squad during the January transfer window.

They did well to improve their defensive options with the signings of Micky Van de Ven and Ashley Phillips during the summer transfer window. While Ashley Phillips is a young player, and a long-term prospect for the club, Van de Ven has established himself as a key player for the first team since joining the club.

However, the 22-year-old Dutchman is currently sidelined with an injury and manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Tottenham will need to invest in a quality central defender during the January transfer window.

He said via Standard: “Ultimately, we still need to sign another centre-back because at the moment we are a little bit on tenterhooks because if something happens again we are short and we are already short.”

It is evident that they are lacking in depth in that position and signing a central defender should be a top priority for them. They have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks and it remains to be seen who they end up signing.

Cristian Romero is the only reliable defender available right now. Eric Dier has struggled for regular gametime and the England international could look to move on in January.

Tottenham started the season well but they have had a dip in form recently. It will be interesting to see if they can bounce back and finish the season strongly. They will be desperate to secure Champions League qualification and Daniel Levy must look to back the manager with the right signings in January.
