Tottenham Hotspur star defender Cristian Romero is being touted for a pivotal role in the upcoming season.
Romero, a standout performer in the ongoing Copa America with Argentina, is expected to be crucial for Spurs, as reported by Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Dan Bardell.
The 26-year-old centre-back has played a key role in Argentina’s progress to the Copa America semi-finals, where they will face Canada.
Bardell, speaking to Tottenham News, praised Romero’s continuous improvement since joining the Lilywhites.
He acknowledged that while the defender occasionally exhibits moments of recklessness, his adaptation to the Premier League has been impressive.
Bardell highlighted that Romero is nearly an undisputed starter for Argentina, underscoring his high calibre as a defender.
His excellent form in the Copa America is a positive sign for Tottenham, indicating that he will return to the club ready to make a significant impact.
He said:
“I think every season, Romero has gotten better.
“He does have the odd moment of madness but he’s getting used to the Premier League and getting better.
“He’s an almost undisputed starting centre-back for Argentina and he’s played a lot for them. It’s great for Spurs to see him go and have a great Copa America and reach the semi-final as a minimum now.
“He will need rest but he will come back and play a huge role for Spurs next season.“
Romero joined Spurs in the summer of 2021 on loan from Atalanta, a move that was made permanent the following season for €52 million.
Last season, he made 33 Premier League appearances and scored five goals, the highest among defenders in the league, reflecting his impact on both ends of the pitch. (Transfermarkt)
Top European clubs, including Real Madrid, have expressed significant interest in Romero as a potential acquisition this summer. However, Tottenham is keen to retain their leading defender, recognizing his vital role in their plans.
As the new season approaches, Spurs fans can anticipate Romero continuing his development and playing a key role in the team’s success.
