Tottenham plotting big-money move for 22-year-old South American ace

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Brazilian defender Morato.

A report from the Sun claims that the 22-year-old has attracted the attention of the Premier League club with his performances for Benfica this season.

The report adds that Tottenham sent scouts to watch the player in action during Benfica’s Champions League win over RB Salzburg on Wednesday. It remains to be seen whether they follow up on their interest with a concrete proposal to sign the player next month.

It is no secret that Tottenham need to add defensive reinforcements, especially with Micky van de Ven sidelined with an injury.

Morato is highly rated in Portuguese football and he has the ability to develop into a key player for Tottenham with coaching and experience.

The 22-year-old is a prodigious talent with a big future ahead of him and he will want to play at the highest level. The opportunity to move to the Premier League could be an attractive option for him and Tottenham could provide him with the platform to showcase his ability at a high level.

Spurs must prioritise the signing of a central defender in January if they want to finish the season strongly and secure Champions League qualification.

Cristian Romero is the only reliable central defender available right now and the defensive unit is clearly lacking in depth.

The Brazilian defender joined Benfica in 2019 for a fee of around £5 million but he has a release clause of £68 million in his contract. He has a contract with the Portuguese club until the summer of 2027 and Benfica might not want to sell him for cheap. It remains to be seen whether the Portuguese outfit demand his release clause to be paid in full.

Tottenham will be hoping to sign him for a reasonable price and it will be interesting to see if they can convince Benfica to lower their demands.
