Tottenham are preparing to open formal talks with Micky van de Ven over a new long-term contract, with internal confidence reportedly growing that the Dutch centre-back can be persuaded to commit his future to the club.
According to Team Talk, encouraging communication between Spurs and Van de Ven’s representatives during the summer has prompted the club to move towards formalising negotiations. There is confidence internally that the Netherlands international can now be persuaded to remain in North London.
That represents a notable shift in tone. As recently as 163 days ago, talks were on hold while Spurs were focused on Premier League survival, with sources close to Van de Ven suggesting the player was weighing up his options and had shown little appetite for a new deal. According to Soccernews, Tottenham would prefer to secure a new deal as soon as possible and are now looking to offer him a lucrative contract to secure his long-term future.
The Contract Landscape
Van de Ven’s current deal runs until the summer of 2029, which means Tottenham are not negotiating from a position of panic – the club have made clear he is not for sale. What this is about is rewarding a player whose standing at the club has risen sharply.
