Spurs Land Mateus Fernandes for £85m as United Hesitate and Walk Away

Tottenham Hotspur have won the race to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes in a deal worth £85m, confirmed by David Ornstein – a new club record that eclipses the £65m paid for Dominic Solanke last summer.

The fee is structured as approximately £65m up front with the remainder in add-ons and bonuses, according to TEAMtalk, aligning precisely with the valuation West Ham had held firm on throughout the summer. Fabrizio Romano confirmed it as a done deal, writing that West Ham received “the price they’ve always asked, 100% guaranteed.”

United Hesitated, Spurs Committed

Manchester United were the frontrunners for most of the window. talkSPORT’s Alex Crook reported that personal terms were “basically” agreed between Fernandes and United, but Sky Sports note that United were “not willing to overpay” and had doubts over the 21-year-old’s desire to join them – two conditions West Ham’s asking price was always going to expose. As covered here when Spurs first entered the race against United, it was only a matter of who blinked first.

Spurs did not blink. Ornstein reported that Tottenham submitted the highest proposal, at which point United moved on to alternative targets. Real Madrid had also been monitoring Fernandes – Jose Mourinho reportedly urged the club to pursue him after taking the Madrid job – but Spurs’ willingness to meet the full valuation ended the competition quickly.

What Fernandes Gives De Zerbi

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is exactly the profile Roberto De Zerbi’s system demands: technically precise, press-resistant, and capable of operating in tight spaces in central areas. For a side that has been actively rebuilding its midfield engine room this summer, Fernandes represents the highest-priority acquisition of the window – and the price reflects it.

Fernandes has been given permission to undergo his medical at Spurs, with the contract signing expected to follow shortly after. Whether £85m proves to be money well spent is the only question left – and Spurs fans have been in this position before.
