Jose Mourinho should have been allowed to enjoy Tottenham’s 2-0 win over West Ham United last night but instead he had to field more questions about Tanguy Ndombele.
French journalist Julien Maynard of Telefoot tweeted shortly after the final whistle that Ndombele, who was again an unused substitute, that all communication between player and manager has ceased after Ndombele told Mourinho that he does not want to work with him anymore.
Mourinho played down the report as “nothing” at his post-match press conference, but yet again, win, lose or draw, Ndombele or no Ndombele, the story is about him and not the team.
The French midfielder is quickly approaching Paul Pogba territory and we do not want to clog up the club’s entire news cycle with toxic speculation that will eventually work against us.
We cannot stop the tabloids from pedalling gossip, but as fans we can play our part by changing our own narrative. Stop hijacking every team news post with ‘free Ndombele’ when clearly the 23-year-old hasn’t done enough to deserve his place in Jose’s side.
I know Mourinho has let world beaters slip through the net before, but the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah were competing with other top-class players at Chelsea. He could afford to leave them out and get results. All Ndombele has to do is prove he is better than Harry Winks. If Ndombele is as good as his supporters say he is and works hard it won’t be long until he gets his chance.
In the meantime, let’s give the situation some time to settle without adding fuel to the fire at every opportunity.
