Opinion: THFC Potentially Playing With Red Card Fire Should They Pursue This Line Of Debate

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed today at Jose Mourinho’s press conference that they have appealed Son Heung-min’s red card received against Chelsea.

Football London quote Mourinho describing the dismissal as an “injustice”.

The South Korean was sent off for the third time in 16 Premier League games for a petulant kick out at Antonio Rudiger during the 2-0 defeat.

As it stands, Son will miss the festive games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Norwich City. By appealing the decision, Spurs risk Son’s suspension being increased, as The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare explains.

In the worst case scenario, Son could end up being banned for six games.

This, however, is unlikely as the length that it took VAR official Paul Tierney to overrule on-field referee Anthony Taylor – several minutes – means that the FA would be difficulty placed to argue that the appeal is “frivolous”.

It is worth noting that Son’s last red card, against Everton following the Andre Gomes incident, was rescinded, but I doubt he’ll get lucky again.

The club must know that and are playing with fire even filing this appeal.
