The financial crisis surrounding football doesn’t seem to apply to Chelsea.
Sky Sports understands that Roman Abramovich has got his cheque book out to agree a £49.4m, £200-000-per-week deal for prolific RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, right from under the noses of long-term suitors Liverpool.
The cash-splashers across London have previously agreed to the £33.3m transfer of Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech – fee according to Sky Sports – so have two top-class talents arriving for next season, while the rest of us are scratching around for loans and free transfers amid the Covid-19 chaos.
Chelsea have been outspending us for years, but this summer market was supposed to be a great equalizer, and news of more major investment in player recruitment from Abramovich has opened old wounds among Spurs fans who wish our ownership showed just a shred of the same ambition.
Blame Levy & ENIC for their own failings all you want but you can’t put any responsibility at their feet for the actions of others. Let Chelsea do what they want. The blokes they’re buying aren’t better than Harry and Sonny.
