Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero has emerged as a surprise target for Arsenal, although Spurs do not want to sell to their north London rivals.
Arsenal have made enquiries about the Argentina international as they seek defensive cover following William Saliba’s lengthy injury, according to a report from CaughtOffside, which cited initial reporting from The Athletic and transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.
Romano reported that Arsenal had made enquiries about Romero, but that Tottenham preferred the possibility of an overseas sale. The club’s stance means a deal with Arsenal appears unlikely.
Spurs reject an Arsenal deal
Tottenham and Arsenal rarely conduct direct transfer business, reflecting the long-standing rivalry between the clubs. Romano’s reporting indicates that Tottenham do not intend to entertain talks with Arsenal over Romero.
Arsenal have also been linked with Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, according to the Daily Mail. That link comes as Arsenal continue to look at centre-back options.
Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan remain involved
Atlético Madrid have emerged as Romero’s most likely destination. Romano reported that the Spanish club were in club-to-club talks with Tottenham and were also in discussions with the player’s camp.
Inter Milan had agreed terms with Tottenham, according to Romano, but still needed exits before they could proceed. That situation has left Atlético in a strong position as talks continue.
For Arsenal, Tottenham’s position means they will need to look elsewhere if they are to add defensive cover.
