Tottenham Could Buy Back Marcus Edwards For Just £6.8m

Marcus Edwards was supposed to be the next big thing at Tottenham.

The skilful winger was dubbed ‘mini-Messi’ by Mauricio Pochettino in 2016, as The Mirror details, but failed to live up to this moniker unfairly slapped on him at 17, and left on a free transfer before the start of this season.

However, it appears as though Spurs have safeguarded ourselves in case Edwards does go on to fulful the potential that he promised as a teenager, with Football London reporting that we insisted on the inclusion of a 50% sell-on fee when allowing him to join Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

And it’s a good job too, as Edwards is starting to look like the player that we once hoped he would become, scoring four goals and contributing seven assists in 17 league appearances in his debut season for Vitoria. He also scored at the Emirates in the Europa League against Arsenal; the legend.

Football London understands that Edwards has a £13.6m release clause in his Vitoria contract, so we currently stand to make £6.8m if the 21-year-old is sold. This clause also effectively gives us a buy-back option of £6.8m should we ever want to give the England youth international another shot.

Edwards has not proven us wrong yet to the extent where a return to Spurs seems plausible. But his performances might have put him on the radar of bigger clubs in Portugal, or across the rest of the continent, and £6.8m would be a handy addition to a very depleted transfer budget this summer.
