Lionel Messi’s camp denies claims Barça’s failed transfer pursuit of Cristian Romero is the reason for departure

FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi have parted ways as negotiations, which were on the way to closing, took a significant turn, leading to the departure of the 34-year-old.

Now, what exactly does the departure of Messi have to do with Tottenham Hotspur? Well, according to Mundo Deportivo, one of the reasons why the negotiations have gone into a tailspin has been the non-signing of Cristian Romero.

The Atalanta BC central defender, champion of the Copa América with Argentina, was an express request from Messi to reinforce the Barcelona defense. The move for Romero did not materialize, which became a concern for the Argentine regarding the negotiations.

Barcelona’s financial situation and the interest from other clubs such as Tottenham made it complicated for the Spanish club to close out a deal.

However, Messi’s camp denies these claims that the name came out in some conversations because Barça had it on a list, but that it was not an express request of the Argentine footballer and is therefore not a reason for the break.

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Romero is flying to London to finalize the last details to finalize his move to Tottenham.
