“I am very happy” – Antonio Conte comments on Giovani Lo Celso’s performance against Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Giovani Lo Celso had an impressive match this week in the UEFA Champions League against FC Bayern Munich. Villarreal defeated the German giants 1-0 in a surprising result during the quarterfinal matchups.

Lo Celso played all 90 minutes against Bayern Munich, providing five key passes on 70 touches and completing 36 of 42 passes for an 86-percent completion percentage for the Spanish side. The 26-year-old also won eight of his 19 total duels.

During Spurs manager Antonio Conte’s news conference ahead of their matchup against Aston Villa, the Italian tactician was asked about the Argentine midfielder’s performance in the Champions League.

Conte stated that he is happy to see Lo Celso succeed in a league he’s familiar with and added that the Argentine needed to play with continuity.

“First of all, I’m really happy for his great performance. He needed to play with regularity, with continuity. For this reason, he went to Spain in a league he knows very well because he played very well, and Tottenham bought him when he played in that league,” Conte said.

“To go back there and show he’s in good form is good for everybody, especially because Tottenham paid a lot of money for him. I am very happy because he is playing every game, he’s showing he’s a good player, but I never said he’s not a good player.”

Transfer window specialist Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Villarreal is more than happy with Lo Celso. The La Liga club plans are to open talks with Tottenham to keep the midfielder, as there’s no buy option included in the loan deal.
