Everton is now ahead of Ajax in the pursuit of Tottenham’s £21M outcast

Steven Bergwijn is one of the players that Tottenham Hotspur wants to offload this summer, and despite his lack of production, there is a market for the 24-year-old.

Ajax has been one of the club reportedly heavily interested in the winger, but De Telegraaf reports that the Dutch giants face competition as Everton are leading the race to sign the Netherlands international.

The Toffees are reportedly ready to match Tottenham’s asking price, too, believed to be in the region of £21million. However, there’s one thorn in Everton being able to bring Bergwijn to Goodison Park.

Despite having the financial advantage, the Tottenham forward wants a move to Ajax because they compete in the UEFA Champions League next season. Bergwijn is looking for regular minutes ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this year to ensure he has his spot.

As a result, he might believe playing regularly in his native country could also boost the forward’s chances. Nonetheless, Ajax has failed to agree with Tottenham on a transfer fee, seeing a £17 million offer rejected.
