BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has insisted that it would be understandable if Harry Kane wanted a move away from Tottenham.
As noted by Sky Sports at the weekend, the 26-year-old raised doubts over his future at Spurs as he conceded that he could consider an exit if he felt as though the club weren’t moving in the right direction to win trophies.
That in turn has led to plenty of discussion over his future on Monday, and Sutton believes that given how Tottenham are off the pace in terms of competing for the Premier League title, Kane should consider an exit if offered a move.
“I can understand the predicament he is in,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “But if he wants to win the Premier League, then he should move on and go to a club who have better chance of winning it than Spurs do.
“We all understand he wants to win something. So if he wants to win something, I wouldn’t begrudge him a move. Spurs are a brilliant club, but at this moment in time they are way behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
“If one of those clubs came in for him, if you were Harry Kane you would be be stupid not to go.”
Much will perhaps depend on Jose Mourinho’s plans for the summer and whether or not he’s backed in the transfer market ahead of next season to stamp his mark on the squad.
Should Spurs bring in players capable of helping them compete on multiple fronts for major honours, that could help convince the likes of Kane to stay on and continue to help them achieve their objectives.
If they struggle to do so as they’re set to end this season empty-handed again, time will tell if it’s enough to force Kane to consider his options as early as the end of this campaign.
