Tottenham star helped convince Emerson Royal to agree to Spurs transfer

Tottenham secured the signing of Brazilian full-back Emerson Royal yesterday in one of the high profile transfers of the transfer window.

They took advantage of Barcelona’s financial struggles to get their man and will feel they now have a strong squad to choose from.

Fans didn’t expect them to sign a new right-back in this transfer window as they haven’t offloaded Serge Aurier yet and they also have Matt Doherty and Japhet Tanganga, who can play that role.

Aurier had a shortage of takers and was down the pecking order but Doherty, who had worked with Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves, has also been struggling to start matches, leaving academy graduate, Tanganga to play most of their games.

Emerson had just joined Barcelona after two seasons on loan at Real Betis and he was looking forward to playing for them in this campaign.

The last thing on his mind would have been a transfer away, but it happened and The Athletic said he needed to be convinced about moving to London.

The report said Spurs asked Lucas Moura to speak to him and the former PSG star helped to convince him that he would feel at home if he made the move.

That would have gone a long way in helping him make the transfer decision.
