‘…stay and fight’ – Tottenham star claims he has no plans of leaving the club

Matt Doherty has revealed in a recent interview that he has no plans of leaving the club and will rather stay back and fight for a spot in Antonio Conte’s team

The former Wolves man had to earn his spot last season as well as he forced his way into Conte’s starting XI bagging 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. However, he then picked up an injury against Aston Villa which saw his season come to an end rather, unfortunately.

Doherty will hope to pick up from where he left off last season. However, this season he won’t be competing for the spot with Emerson Royal alone keeping in view the imminent arrival of Djed Spence from Middlesbrough as reported by almost every major journalist now including Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports.

Despite having to go up against potentially thee players for the spot on the right-hand side, Doherty feels the competition is good and he is up for the challenge. He told Football.London:

“There’s a lot of competition and that’s never a bad thing, it brings everybody’s standards up, makes everybody train properly, train hard and that’s what you want.

“You want to earn your position on merit. You don’t want it handed to you. We’re all competitors and that’s what we want. We want to fight against each other and get a place.”

And when asked if he will be staying at Spurs this season, he said:

“Of course. I haven’t been told otherwise. My plan is to stay and fight for my place. We’ve got an exciting season ahead. Why would I want to go anywhere else?”
