‘Spurs have made a mistake’ – Former star gives his verdict on transfer decision

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Marcus Edwards was allowed to leave the club back in 2019 after he failed to cement his place in their first team plans.

The 23 year old has now gone on to establish himself as a key player for Sporting and he produced a superb performance against the Londoners in the Champions League earlier this week.

As per former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, Tottenham have made a mistake in letting the player leave and they might regret their decision in the long run.

Edwards left the club in search of regular football and he joined Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019. The player excelled in Portugal and he was snapped up by Sporting.

So far he has scored three goals in six appearances for his new club this season and he will be looking to add to his tally in the coming months.

Edwards can operate as a winger as well as a central attacking midfielder and Spurs could certainly use someone like him right now. They are missing a creative presence in the middle of the park and the 23 year old could have been a useful player for Antonio Conte.

In fact, Spurs tried to bring in a creative midfielder during the summer transfer window as well. They were linked with Nicolo Zaniolo and Christian Eriksen.

Robinson said to Football Insider“He looked very good in that game.

“It is easy to get yourself up for it when you’re playing against a team you previously played for. You feel like you have got something to prove.

“If he continues to do that week in, week out Tottenham may be regretful. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.

“If he plays to that level every week it looks like Spurs have made a mistake. Let’s be honest though, they do not often make mistakes when it comes to letting players go.”
