Mourinho Told Gold Sessegnon Has Similar Traits To Ashley Cole

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho continues to have high hopes for Ryan Sessegnon’s future as a left-back, according to Alasdair Gold.

Some Spurs fans are starting to get concerned about the development of a player who was once the hottest young property in English football.

The 20-year-old has not featured in either of our matches since the Premier League’s restart and his path into the team at left-back seems to be blocked by Mourinho’s use of that position as a third centre-half with the ball.

But Gold has alleviated those worries by reaffirming that Mourinho still has trust in Sessegnon that he will be a major asset for us in the long term.

Gold wrote in his Football London Q&A: “Mourinho likes him and wanted him at United. For now, it’s about building him up & working on his defensive skills

“Mourinho told me he sees him as a terrific future left-back, with similar traits to Ashley Cole, but he’s not ready yet. It’s telling that he looks to have bulked up during lockdown which will aid his development. I’d be surprised if he’s loaned out a year after being bought for £30m.”

This is a relief because Sessegnon is a talent we don’t want to let slip through our fingers, and I’d like to see him get more game time soon.

Although he’s not ready to play the inverted role that Ben Davies does, he could play the advanced role that Serge Aurier does, on the other flank. Having this option would make us less predictable to our opponents.
