‘If you don’t play…’ – Spurs flop takes a sly dig at Antonio Conte

Spurs have seen a number of players leave the club this summer after falling out of favour under the Italian since his arrival, with one in particular making a significant impact this season.

Bergwijn was one of several Spurs players let go this summer after failing to impress Conte last season and falling out of favour with the Italian, but has flourished so far in Ajax this season.

And, after scoring twice for Ajax in their 4-0 win over Cambuur on Saturday, bringing his season total to six goals in five league games, Bergwijn has lashed out at Conte for his lack of playing time last season.

After the game, the Netherlands international told Algemeen Dagblad:

“I’ve always had the ability to score. But it’s difficult to demonstrate that if you don’t play.”

“I’m not working on that [being the top scorer this season]. I don’t have a certain number of goals in my head that I should achieve. The most important thing is to continue like this. I look at the complete picture and just want to win.”

His blistering start to the 2022/23 season clearly demonstrates that the 24-year-old has genuine quality to offer, but he believes he did not get enough opportunities to showcase his talents during his time in north London, particularly under Conte.
