“He’s like Drogba”: Former player urges Tottenham to get striker target “over the line”

“He’s like Drogba”. Now there are three words likely to get Tottenham fans excited about a transfer target.

Those words are slightly less exciting when you learn they were said by Jimmy Walker about Olivier Giroud.

Walker told Love Sport Radio: “Someone like Giroud would be great. He’s a top striker, and he wouldn’t mind playing second fiddle to Kane – he would know his role. He’s one they should look at, because he knows how to play up top on his own.

“He’s like Drogba – he can hold the ball up, win headers, link the play and be a real focal point for the side.

“I can’t see anyone coming in for fifty million and being a real top player, but Giroud could do a job for Spurs so maybe he’s one to get over the line”.

While former goalkeeper Walker – who was on Tottenham’s books between 2009 and 2010 – is some way off the mark with his comparison, his point that Spurs should look to sign Giroud certainly has some merit.

Giroud’s CV would certainly make him an unpopular choice among many Tottenham fans, due to his former Arsenal and current Chelsea links.

But he is proven at Premier League level, he would provide a strong aerial threat that is currently sadly lacking, and one imagines the like of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli would thrive playing around him.

London transfer guru David Ornstein suggested earlier today that Giroud was pretty much Tottenham’s only last realistic option as they look to recruit a striker before Friday night’s deadline.

Ornstein also claimed Giroud was “open to all offers”
