“He’d be an obvious replacement for Jan Vertonghen,” says BBC 5 Live pundit

Danny Mills has revealed his belief that Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren could be an option to replace Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham this summer.

Vertonghen, 32, will see his current contract with Spurs expire at the end of the season, and with no suggestion that a renewal is imminent, it could lead to an exit for the Belgian stalwart.

In the event that happens, Mills has put forward Lovren as a target Tottenham should be looking at, with the Daily Mail previously linking Jose Mourinho with a move for the Croatian international.

“He is the self-professed greatest centre-half in the world. There seems to be a shortage of defenders out there at the moment,” he told Football Insider. “He is still a good player. Although he has quality he does make a mistake from time to time.

“There will be Premier League teams high up the table that are looking at his services. He would be an obvious replacement for Jan Vertonghen were he to leave Spurs this summer.”

Time will tell if Mourinho agrees with that suggestion if he is forced to bring in a replacement to fill the void that Vertonghen would leave behind.

Lovren boasts experience at the top level for club and country, and so he may well be seen as a like-for-like swap for the Spurs ace, while he could be open to an exit from Anfield given he has fallen down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

The former Southampton ace has made just 14 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and so Spurs could offer him a more prominent role if they decide to step up their pursuit this summer.
