Eric Dier makes a bold claim ahead of Spurs’ tough run of games

Tottenham will face as many as nine games in 22 days before the end of September as they look to win a trophy this season.

The Lilywhites started their Premier League campaign against Everton last weekend and they were beaten 1-0 by the Toffees.

They will next be in action tomorrow in the Europa League away at Lokomotiv Plovdiv of Bulgaria.

That game will be followed by another league game at the weekend before they take on Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup next week Tuesday.

It is a hectic run of games and if they progress in both the Europa League and Carabao Cup, they will play even more games.

Eric Dier insists that they have the depth in their squad to play those games, he, however, thinks that such a fixture list shows a lack of regard for the welfare of the players.

“I think the depth of our squad is the strongest I think it’s been in my time at Tottenham,” he said via BT Sports. “If you look at the players who were on the bench and the players who weren’t even in the squad on Sunday.

“I think there’s fantastic depth and fantastic quality throughout the squad and the manager has emphasised that if we want to be successful and win games and go far, it’s all about the squad and that squad performing.

“It’s just if you look at that schedule, that schedule isn’t showing any care for players’ physical welfare.

“It’s common sense really, trying to ask someone to play Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday. It doesn’t seem like there is any care for players’ welfare in that situation.”

That is a bold claim from Dier and not one I think will garner much sympathy, especially when Nurses, who earn less in a whole year than what some of these players earn in a week have been putting in huge shifts day after day to save lives.

What might help is if they actually win a game, players that win don’t tend to moan as much or feel that tired.
