Christian Eriksen breaks Spurs promise after agreeing deal with Manchester United

According to Sky Sports, Christian Eriksen has agreed in principle to join Manchester United, putting an end to reports linking him to a fairytale return to Tottenham.

This comes as a major U-turn from the Denmark international having made a promise to Daniel Levy in 2017 that he would not join another English club out of respect for Spurs as reported by the Daily Mail. And the Danish appeared to have fulfilled this commitment when Chelsea and Manchester United made a move for him 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Eriksen eventually left Tottenham in 2020 and signed for Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan where he won the Serie A with him. However in the summer of 2020, during the Euros, Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during their opener vs Finland. Thankfully he made a complete recovery after being fitted with an cardioverter defibrillator device.

Euros 2020 was the turning point in his career as soon after, the Italian FA told Eriksen he needs to remove the defibrillator device if he wants to play in the Serie A again. This saw his contract being terminated. After some time away from football, in January 2022 he returned to the Premier League with Brentford on a 6 month contract and had an impactful season for the Bees.

And now with Eriksen having agreed to join the Red Devils on a 3 year deal, he looks set to complete a miraculous return to the top of football. Regardless of how you feel about him going back on his promise to Spurs, you just can’t help but feel happy for him considering all what he has been through over the last couple of years.
