Antonio Conte fires back at pundit labeling Tottenham as a one-man team

English football pundit Paul Merson recently stated that Tottenham Hotspur was a one-man squad, referencing the north London club’s dependence on Harry Kane to carry them offensively.

Nonetheless, manager Antonio Conte touched on this subject, stating that he thinks Spurs are a more balanced team and to rely on Harry Kane for goals, despite Merson’s suggestions.

“It is important for us to have many solutions to get three points and to win,” Conte said, whose remarks were relayed by Express. “Also, because this way, you are unpredictable.”

“If you only have one player to score, it could be simple for your opponent to stop him with two or three men, and then the game has finished. Instead, we have created a good idea of football, with many solutions for different players and to be unpredictable.

Last week, Son Heung-min carried the scoring load against Aston Villa, putting together a hat-trick. Furthermore, the 29-year-old has recorded six goals in his last five Premier League fixtures.

Furthermore, Conte stated the role Kane plays as a leader on the team to see his teammates score when he’s not finding the back of the net.

“And Harry is the first person to enjoy other players scoring, especially if it means we can win and get three points. It is good to score, but at the same time, it is really good to make assists, and he has an important vision of football, and for us, he is an important player,” Conte said. “The only final target for us is to try and reach the best possible position at the end of the season.”

Despite what Merson claims, Tottenham will hope that it can lean on Kane in these final seven fixtures as they’re on the verge of clinching UEFA Champions League qualification. Spurs are looking to their star players in this last stretch of matches because that’s when they’re needed the most for these big moments.
