“Terrible” – Tottenham star singled out for his poor performance against Brighton despite win

Tottenham defender Eric Dier has been singled out by football writer Andrew Gaffney following his performance against Brighton during their 2-1 win.

Despite Spurs securing all three points thanks to goals from Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, Dier was responsible for giving away the ball multiple times, including in the build-up to Mitoma’s goal which was fortunately ruled out by VAR.

Gaffney didn’t hold back in his assessment of Dier, taking to Twitter to express his disappointment.

He wrote: “It’s sad to see but Eric Dier is terrible, man.”

Dier’s inconsistent form this season has been a concern for Tottenham, and a recent report has linked him with a move to AS Roma, where former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on reuniting with him.

With reports that Spurs are looking to sign a centre-back in the summer, perhaps a move away would be the best for Dier. However, it should be noted that Dier has played a key role in Tottenham’s recent success, and he could still have a part to play in their future.

Despite the criticism of Dier, Tottenham will be pleased with their hard-fought victory over a tough Brighton side. Son gave them the perfect start with an incredible goal from outside the box, but Brighton got level before half-time as captain Lewis Dunk thumped in a header from a corner.

Brighton continued to threaten throughout the game and had two goals denied as well as a penalty that should have been awarded, but with luck on their side, Spurs managed to survive before scoring a winner in the 79th minute from a wonderful Harry Kane strike.

The win was crucial for Tottenham as they continue their fight for a top-four finish.
