Summer transfer saga still affecting Harry Kane, says Spurs legend

Former Tottenham star Clive Allen has discussed Harry Kane’s dip in form after the England international’s failure to score in any of his four appearances for the club so far this season.

Kane just doesn’t look his old self right now, and that proved costly for Spurs in Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat against Chelsea, though Allen insists it’s not all down to Kane himself.

The former striker believes Kane is having to drop deep because of a lack of service, and though the 28-year-old has previously played that kind of role well, it seems to be quite clearly affecting his form now, and perhaps disrupting the overall balance of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

“He’ll be really disappointed with the service he got, inevitably that means he drops deeper,” Allen told talkSPORT.

“He plays that role there’s no doubt about that, we see him play it brilliantly last season but I do believe that restricts the number of opportunities he had.

“I think Nuno was very defensive at Crystal Palace and it just didn’t work, we didn’t carry the threat you would have hoped for.”

Allen also feels that Kane must still be distracted by the transfer saga that took place over the summer, with the Telegraph among the numerous sources to link him with a possible move to Manchester City.

“It has to affect him,” Allen added. “In the back of his mind if he thought there was a move going to take place in the summer that hasn’t happened, there’s no doubt that has had a little effect on him.”

It may well be that Kane was expecting a move and is disappointed it didn’t happen, but he has to be professional now and do more of what he has done throughout his career to attract that interest from other clubs in the first place.
