The return of Gareth Bale to the Premier League is an exciting prospect, but one that doesn’t have everyone convinced. There’s the 31-year-old’s age, and a track record of injuries are enough to make anyone wince. What is most important of all, is what tangible good would the Welshman bring to Tottenham?
Bale has been a serial winner at Real Madrid, and no matter how disgruntled some Spanish fans have become, nobody can take away his silverware; La Liga: 2016–17, 2019–20, Copa del Rey: 2013–14, Supercopa de España: 2017, UEFA Champions League: 2013–14, 2015–16,2016–17, 2017–18.
A source close to the club believes that whilst Jose Mourinho is excited at the prospect of Bale at Spurs, the Portuguese needs assurances that the boy is here to work, and once he has them from Bale, he also requires Levy to use this stopgap to get a deal in a place for another striker. Gareth Bale would as Ollie Holt above suggests, be a great sticking plaster, but if this deal were to go through, then it would be no more than Daniel Levy catching the break of his career.
What Gareth Bale is most definitely not, is a long term solution. If Levy were to fail to prepare the squad again, then it’s difficult to see Mourinho’s contract running beyond the 2022/23 season, when it is set to expire.
